Hello from Izzy and Me xx
« on: July 30, 2009, 12:36:45 AM »
Hello, I'm mum to Izzy our 15 week old blue roan bundle of mischief.  We're new to Cocker's and puppies as we recently lost our 12 year old Westie Chloe who we re-homed when she was almost 4.  Chloe went blind about 3.5 years ago so Izzy is the complete opposite and puppy life is a new experience!  We got Izzy at 6 weeks and can't believe how much she has grown and begun to learn already; we have been to 4 obedience classes, she does so well at home but when we get there all she wants to do is play with the other dogs and their owners, either that or when a 'model' is needed she wags and wiggles as if to say 'pick me, pick me' and when on show thinks it's her job to make everyone else feel better about how their dog has performed by acting the clown!  Still we wouldn't want her any other way (well just maybe!)

This website has been a godsend, as I said we're new to both Cocker's and puppies, there was just so much we didn't know despite all the puppy books.  Hope Izzy can make lots of friends, me too xx

Hi, welcome to COL and cockers in general  :D  I have Gizzy who is 16mths (often mistaken for an Izzy) and Wherry who lives wth her Dad 3 1/2 yrs.  :D
It used to be advised to pick a pup up at 6-8 weeks but now it's firmly said to be 8 weeks as they miss interaction from their Mum and litter mates so that could explain why she is a mischeif with playing at obedience.....or it could just be general cocker-ness  :005: It's great to hear that she is having fun with other doggies though and i'd let her continue to do so for a while though  ;) It's amazing what they can teach each other (good and bad  >:(  :005: ). She sounds like a real character  :luv:  :luv: You do realise though that we will have to see more piccys of her?!  ;)
There are no bad dogs, just bad people

Hello,  I will get around to putting some pics on, it took me this long to figure out how to upload a profile pic, that too needs updating as Izzy is huge now!  My mum has got a Bedlington Terrier called Sophie who has been over to play with Izzy a few times, since then shes lost her apprehension with dogs and thinks they all just want to play. What with that and the excitement of having hotdogs as treats at training she just goes to pieces!  Izzy says hi to Gizzy and Wherry xx

Welcome to COL, I'm sorry to hear about Chloe, I just recently lost my boy Gari who was 9 when I got him, we've just got a new puppy too, so are finding it all new and exciting (I think that's the word!), he starts his puppy classes tonight, so it will be interesting to see how he acts with the others. :D

I hope you enjoy it here and I look forward to seeing pics and hearing how Izzy is getting on. :D

I am sorry to hear about Gari, we got Izzy not because we wanted to replace Chloe ( we couldn't anyway) but needed something to fill the gap, having a puppy is quite an experience isn't it!  I'm not sure quite what we were expecting but I can only liken it to having a baby to look after - we go to bed absolutely worn out!  I hope your class goes well tonight, it will be interesting to hear how you're taught as I've heard different things from people who took their dogs a few years ago. What's your little fella called?

He's called Duggie, you'll find plenty of pics of him in the puppy photo section! ;) Like you, we needed to fill a gap, but could never even think of Duggie as a replacement for Gari, he just couldn't be replaced. :luv: I don't have children, but it does seem like having a baby, but although he is my first puppy I have had a lot of experience as I was a puppy carer in a rescue, so I knew what to expect, but at least I eventually got to go home and get a break when I worked there! :005:

I'll post all about the class when we get back, I'm looking forward to it - I think! :lol2:

Hi, I will get round to posting some pics - Izzy is now very different from my profile pic.  Karenann, sorry to hear about your Westie, bet you're looking forward to getting your pup.  Izzy has altered so much since we got her (10 weeks ago now), she exasperates us sometimes but already is showing signs of being a well behaved dog (I keep convincing myself anyway!).  Keep us up to date on how things go xx

A bit surprised that your breeder let the pup go at 6 weeks to you, why was that?

Hi Helen and Jarvis,

Izzy was one of four and they all left at 6 weeks, to be honest with you we are new to puppy life and although I did do some research didn't give alot of thought to 6 weeks being a bit too young.  My friend has 2 Jack Russells both of which she had at 6 weeks.  We did take Izzy to our vets to be checked, she didn't say anything about her only being 6 weeks.  When we expressed an interest in the pups the breeder said they could go at 6 weeks as long as they were managing the dry food and were lapping ok; we saw Izzy 9 days before we brought her home and she was lapping then,  I kept in touch to find out how the food was going.  She was having a little milk in the mornings when she left the breeder but we found this was going straight through her so stopped after a couple of days, the vet said that was fine.  She has settled in well so I hope there hasn't been any harm in her coming so soon.  Incidentally the breeders other bitch had pups two days before we collected Izzy, they were going at 6 weeks too.
