Health test question
« on: June 03, 2011, 03:37:56 PM »
Hi, Belle's sire is DNA tested clear from FN and PRA, her dam is untested, Monty's sire is DNA tested clear fro FN and PRA  his mum was untested.
So am I right in thinking that they could both be potential carriers? If so would it be acceptable just to have either Belle or Monty tested, if I were ever to contemplate breeding a litter from them? Any help much appreciated ;)

They could both be potential carriers so if you were just planning to test one, the results would have to come back clear. If it shows as a carrier then you would definitely have to test the other dog too and hope those results are clear otherwise you will need to find a different stud dog for Belle.

Just thought of something, If I had Belle tested and she came back clear, Monty can only be a carrier not affected due to his dads results, so if he was a carrier and Belle is clear what would their offspring potentially be. Does that make sense?

a clear and a carrier i believe gives an average of three quarters of the litter clear and 1 quarter carrier,.....but im sure someone more knowledgeable will come along and contradict me if im wrong  ;)

So no chance of being affected but a small chance of being a carrier?

There is no excuse not to test your dogs if you know about the tests. I would think a breeder using their own dogs and only testing one is cutting corners  :-\.

Even if you were going to endorse them not to be bred from?? Will probably get them both tested anyway this is all hypothetical as yet which is why I am asking for advice ;)

I would rather know the possible results then you could say the pups are clear by parentage and you wouldn't have to test any pup you keep, I would endorse all pups irrelevant of the parents results .

Excellent :shades: Will you be hip scoring too? Hip problems are definitely not unknown in the breed so if you really want to do it properly, it's something I'd consider.

I think if you want to breed a litter then you should health test both dam and sire as recommended by the KC accredited breeder scheme. It's so important to get it right and breed healthy pups irrelevant of endorsments. Some people will breed even if there are endorsments and be quite happy to sell the puppies without being KC registered. ;)

What does it involve Jane? Our old GSD was hip scored but as I was younger I don't remember what was involved?
