Title: Misty - at home update
Post by: Misty Roan on June 23, 2014, 06:54:53 PM
Misty has had her exploratory and X-ray and it seems it is large tumour.  Waiting for biopsy results but I have to say I'm not feeling hopeful.

I am really sad but you're right I'm spoiling her.  Her appetite is good so she's just had a midday treat of tinned sardine, normally it's just two meals a day.  I've also got a large bag of liver I dried last week. Better not go too mad though.

So very sorry to read this. But don't give up, our cockers can surprise us sometimes; my Hollie was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and I kept her for nearly 2 years.  I miss her still but good memories; I knew she had cancer but she didn't and was a happy dog right to the end. Look after yourself and her and have fun. xx

Post by: Misty Roan on June 30, 2014, 07:39:28 PM
Than you all for your support means a lot.  Misty had the MRI and a deeper biopsy.  The specialist said the first biopsy was not conclusive enough about the type of tumour and it may not be as aggressive as first thought.  So, back to waiting game.  If it turns out be non-agressive the surgeon is optimistic that he can remove the tumour, even though it means losing jaw bone as well, and if he can remove enough margin there would only be a 30 % chance of reoccurrence.  If it's aggressive we have to reconsider options.  But I'm feeling a lot more hopeful now.  Thanks again everyone and I'll update you next week.x

Hopefully you will be as lucky as we were with our little Rosie. Rosie was an ex breeding bitch, who developed a tumour on her lip and it was removed by Many Tears just before we got her. The surgery was very successful and now 19 months on she has never had any further problems. People ask if she has problems eating and drinking and the honest answer is no problems at all. Good luck with the surgery. I've got before and after photos if you want to see them pm me. I'm away tonight, but will be back on Wednesday.

Took Misty for her op this morning. She is staying overnight and I'm dreading picking her up tomorrow.  Her  poor little face is going to be really bad, losing jaw bone and teeth. Lots of stitches inside and out and warned that her cheek will puff out as she breathes without the bone. It might get better in time. I'm just praying I made the right descision and the pain subsides quickly. Vet will send everything for analysis to see if margins are wide enough.

Thanks Archie Bean. She will always be perfect to me. I just feel so cruel putting her through it. I only spoke to a nurse earlier and the vet has just this minute called and sounded a lot more positive, he seems to think he has removed it all so just wait for lab to confirm and it will all be worth it.  :016:

It really will be worth it, as I said in a previous post, Rosie is totally oblivious to her wound. It might look barbaric when you first see the wound, but they do heal very quickly

You are right about Rosie, she is a real Daddy's girl as anyone who has met her will testify. We are going to Angelsey in August in the van. The site is two minutes walk from a private dog friendly beach, so I'll be posting lots of photos of cockers enjoying themselves. Misty will be back to normal in no time, I can't believe how resilient these gorgeous dogs are.

I promise not to drive you all mad with daily updates but just want to say thank you again for your messages.  I can see improvement in Misty since yesterday.  We had a poor nights sleep but she made up for that today on the sofa  :005:. She's now just really enjoyed her tea and is a lot brighter.  The vet has said it will be a few weeks before we get the results on the margins as bone takes longer.  We go back in 12 days to the specialist for stitches out and my own vet next week to check on a little eye problem.   :bigarmhug: from Sue and Misty.

That's exactly what she seems to do.  I keep seeing her sitting in corners staring into space. Vet has suggested trying to reduce them and seeing how she goes.  It's hard to judge though if they are in pain.  Anyway, not giving her the first of today's, figure with metacam and tramadol last night she might have enough in her system.  If anyone has any other experience please let me know.

When my vet suggested reducing Karla's meds he suggested I cut the tablets into quarters and give 3/4 instead of a whole one, then later go to 1/2  but keep giving the tabs twice daily so she didn't go too long without pain relief. Luckily for her she rarely need them now.

Phone your vet and ask what way is it best to reduce the tablets for Misty, it may be a case of just tweaking the dosage to get it right for her.  ..give her a gentle hug from me. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I know how she feels! When I was waiting to have my hip replaced, 6 years ago, they put me on Tramadol and I was totally wasted, I had to stop taking them as I didn't know where I was. They did stop the pain though!
Title: Re: Misty - at home update

another tramadol user here for a back problem - they are brilliant and really keep pain under control very well. The spaced out feeling is weird, not unpleasant but you just feel all uncoordinated and woozy. I wouldn't want to have to take them for too long, but to use in a short burst to manage pain they are effective, also another bonus is that you feel very chilled and not anxious about being in pain so I am sure Misty will be feeling ok on them - think Dylan the rabbit in the Magic Roundabout  ;)

Looking forward to hearing how Misty is doing today  :luv:

Ben's Mum -  I loved Dylan. :005:

I gave Misty a tramadol last night and so far today she has just had metacam at tea time.  We went to visit a friend today, her OH , who Misty knows well looked after her for a few hours while we girls to a computer repair shop, exciting eh?  We could have shopped too, but to be honest I wanted to get back.  Anyway, apparently she stayed mostly in her (open) crate and slept.  But she was a bit livelier today , excited to see them, and is showing no signs of discomfort.  She ate both her meals and is fast asleep again.  I can't imagine she would sleep or eat so well if she was in pain but I'll give her a tramadol later.  Stitches out this time next week.

If you ever think it's too much you can always open a Tramadol and half the powder with Metacam between. That's what I am going to do with Lyla after her op on my vets advice. That way her pain is covered all day and night but not knocking her out.

For those of you using Metacam, are you aware that you can get it online - usually cheaper than vets

There you go Sheryl - you do need a prescription from vet - but if it is going to be a long term thing - maybe worth thinking about:

I just googled Metacam and quite a few co's came up, but these two I have used for various things (incl Metacam) and have had good service.
