Title: Ear Mites

Molly's ears are bothering her and they is a bit of brown smelly wax in them.  She had ear mites as a tiny puppy which were treated and the vet recommended Stronghold flea treatment which was supposed to also prevent ear mites, some types of worms and mange.

I know it might not be ear mites (and I will be taking her to the vets to find out) but does anybody know how effective Stronghold is?

I tried the stronghold on my dogs but I didnt like it. The only thing our practice uses it for is mange as it seems to be effective.  I always thought that it only killed ear mites in cats but that could have changed now.

Chloe recently had trouble with her ears.  It was the last place left to have a problem with so it came as no shock. ;D  Anyway, I took her because there was a smell coming from them which smelt like yeast.  I was told it was anerobes which multiply to the point of causing trouble a) Because cockers ears flop over and B) The warm weather.  Could it be that and not mites?

I think the best thing to use is a really old fashioned product called Thornit which is powder.  it is available directly from the lady who makes it and her name is Miss Bett, and her tel no is 01485 512210 (she lives in Norfolk).  It is available on some stands at shows too.  I would also recommend wiping the ear regularly with cotton wool and an ear cleaning solution and keeping the hair round the ear hole trimmed so that air can circulate.  I find I only need to use an occasional pinch of Thornit powder and the problem clears up. ;)

I'd go for the Thornit too, for this type of problem - it's really good - will sort it pronto :)

Anaerobes are bacteria I think - I'm sure Gill will know for sure.

I'm not Gill, but yes anaerobes are bacteria - more specifically bacteria which do not require oxygen to survive I believe  :)

No, Thornit is not available in the shops.  Give Miss Bett a ring (number above) and she will pop it in the post for you.  It's excellent stuff ;)
