Jessie can have water, Lynsey - ours always have before their ops, just no food (try explaining why they can't have their bedtime biscuit when everyone else can ;)) Try not to worry, I'm sure Jessie will be fine in next to no time. Do get some Arnica tablets though & start giving her them as soon as you get her home - I've found they do help to reduce any post-op swelling & bruising:)

Daisy had her op a couple of weeks ago. The vet said no food after 7.00pm and no water in the morning.

When I went to pick her up at 2.00pm she seemed ok, but was very groggy when we got home. She just sat around (very un-Cocker) and stared. Then she slept all evening/night. The next day though, she was much better (about 60%) and by the evening she was back to normal.

The vet put a gauze-type cover over the wound which was removed on the Monday (the op was Friday). I was amazed but Daisy didnt lick/scratch the wound at all, never once seemed in pain and the only problem was not taking her for her normal walks.

10 days later, the stitches were removed and I could release the coiled spring!

I'm sure Jessie will be fine too.

The reason we had it done was because we didn't want to put Daisy through having pups, plus the health benefits and we also added up the 3 weeks per season of on the lead walking x 2 per year and it comes to a large portion of her life. Daisy lives for her mad runs on the Downs!

Just read this. I'm sure she'll be fine Lynsey. I know just how you're feeling because I was a nervous wreck when Poppy was spayed last year. I used Arnica tablets too and I'm sure they helped her heal quicker. Think I got them from Boots.

I'm sure she'll be so pleased to see you when you go and pick her up and she'll enjoy lots of cuddles and TLC when she gets home  :)

Hope you're not too worried and give Jessie a big kiss from me and Poppy when she gets home  :-*

I give 1 tablet every hour to begin with - remember not to touch the tablets with your hands, just tip the tablet into the lid of the pot & either empty it straight into Jessie's mouth or you could crush into a powder between 2 spoons & then empty this onto Jessie's tongue. It sounds fiddly but it's not once you get used to it ;) Also don't give Jessie any food with the tablet - homeopathic remedies shouldn't be given with food or either just before or after a dog has eaten. You can reduce the dose gradually as time goes on - the every hour dose is just for the first day or so.

Lyndsey - I don't know about tablets for Jessie - I think you need some.

Seriously - I'm sure she will be fine. I know its very worrying. I worried so much about Phoebe and her op and how bad a mummy I was doing this to her but she was absolutely fine. She was quiet when she came home but back to normal the following day.

She never messed with her stiches and had no problems with them coming out after the 10 days.

Keep us posted. I'll be thinging of Jessie tomorow (and you!)

well there was a drama...knew there would be

I took her in at 8.30am and the vet gave her a check and said ok ring us at 1.00pm....all well you would think..

nope I get a call at 11.00 ...we have given her the general and realised she is actually producing milk in her teats so shes having a false pregnancy...  :o I said how did I not see this???

they wanted me to pick her up straight away, which I did, shes now woozy from general afte having no operation, I have medication for her called...errrm Galastop.. something like that... which I ahve to give her everyday for 7 days... then he said he will operate in 2 weeks maybe!..

I now dont think I like my vet... why didn't he see it when he checked her in the morning... I didn't see it though mind you..

he charged me almost £27 for the priveldge aswell...no I am scared to death by the whole thing, as if I wasn't bad enough before this..  :'(  :'(  :'(

Poor You Lynsey. It really is best for Jessie to get over the phantom Pregnancy before she is spayed. At the moment her hormones  are all over the place, I think it was a good thing the  vet noticed and has given her some treatment to get those hormones under control before he operated. It`s not that easy to see milk unless you look for it and you know what you are looking for ;)Whenever I have taken any of mine for an op they are handed over to a nurse so it would have been fairly easy to miss I think. :)
It`s alway`s a worrying time when an operation is needed, and you will have to go through the anxiety again, just console yourself with the fact that it will be better for Jessie in the long run. But you may well be a nervous wreck! :o

Poor you Lynsey  :( Almost the same thing happened when Poppy was spayed except the vet either didn't notice that Poppy was having a false pregnancy or didn't bother about it and went ahead with the op anyway.

The result was that Poppy's false pregnancy was much worse than it would have been had the op been cancelled, she was miserable, we were miserable and it cost a fortune too  :(

See this thread about it http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/forum/viewtopic . php?t=638 (http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/forum/viewtopic . php?t=638)

I know you must feel terrible about it but it's good that your vet didn't go ahead anyway like mine did, it would have been much worse for Jessie if it had gone ahead.

Hope this has helped you feel a bit better about it :-

Don't worry to much about Jessies phantom, or beat yourself or your vet up over it.  They are not always that easy to spot, it has happened to me and others i know as well.  Mind you it's a cheek to charge you, they just can't help themselves can they! ::)

poor Lynsey  :( and poor Jessie  :'(  **hugs** for both of you (and have another Vodka and coke Lynsey  ;) )

you would think that it would be a good practice for the nurses / vet that takes in bitch for the spay is aware of how to do a general health check, and how to check for false pregnancies - wouldn't save a lot of trouble ... even if it did mean checking in times took 15 minutes instead of 15 seconds!!

Like Fiona and others have said, at least he noticed (eventually) and decided to tell you instead of continuing like Fiona's vet - this at least should give you some confidence in him  :)

Hi Lynsey

Been away a few days so just catching up ;)

I (like Kelly) am surprised that this happened.  It's good news that it was spotted and that the op didn't go ahead but I think I would ask the question why they don't routinely check for this prior to the general anaesthetic ???

Hope she's OK now Lynsey ;)

Haven't looked at the Forum for ages but am on sick leave at the moment (minor op myself - nasty cyst on back of neck that got infected which eventually meant trip to hospital to sort it)  so thought I take a squint.

I'm sure Jessie will be fine.  Bramble had her op at the beginning of May.  She was totally zonked when we brought her home at tea time and stayed that way till the morning but once the anesthetic had worn off she was a complete drama queen ::) ::).  Couldn't get comfy, kept licking her stitches and she was a nightmare with the "lampshade", kept crashing into everything or trying to shake it off so we gave up on that >:(.  Even resorted to getting the vet to give her extra painkillers.  I'm glad to say this behaviour only lasted three or four days and then she was absolutely back to normal and didn't bat an eyelid when her stitches came out and now the scar is barely visible.

It's a good job we had her done, she is the most outrageous flirt, she reminds me of that comedian who used to say "go on chase me", it's embarassing really ;D ;D.

Her coat is still lovely and glossy and isn't showing any signs of changing yet.  When might we expect to see a change if there is going to be one?

yeah I am sure she will be ok when we finally get around to ahving her op, I have took Fionas advice and got her some baby vests, she looks a picture...hubby had lajor laughing fit  when he saw her..  ;D still it will keep her away from the stitches cos knowing jessie she will hate a Lampshade
