Title: William is having a small operation - good news page 7 - lump was harmless
Post by: elaine.e on October 07, 2010, 06:29:02 PM
Please can I have some positive thoughts for my boy tomorrow :luv:

He has a few small patches of black pigmentation on the skin around his eyes and mouth. They weren't there when he was a puppy but have appeared over the last few years. One of our vets calls them William's beauty spots, but I've also been told to keep a watch on them for any changes.

One of them, in a really tricky place about a millimetre or two below the centre of his lower lip, has become raised. It's really tiny and looks like a skin tag but is black of course. My vet doesn't think it's nasty but we agreed that it would be better to have it removed and tested while it's tiny. If it got bigger it could be difficult to remove without damaging his mouth.

So please think of us tomorrow. He's such a good boy at the vets and goes in with his little tail wagging, but I know from past experience that he hates being left there and that he is a complete wuss for a day or so after having an anaesthetic. :D

He's back home :luv:, a bit sleepy and saggy eyed but otherwise seems OK. He has 1 suture where the lump was removed but I haven't had a close look at it yet because he's leaving it alone at the moment and I don't want to draw his attention to it.

Louis was desperately happy to see William come in the front door but the feeling wasn't mutual and William had to do a bit of spaniel swearing :005: to make Louis realise he didn't want to be sniffed and pushed around. Luckily Louis took the hint.

I should get the histiology results on Tuesday or maybe Wednesday and in the meantime William will be back to normal food and exercise tomorrow if he's OK. I have to try and keep the area clean and not let him get mud on it. Just as well the ground is dry and that William doesn't like going in mud or water very much.

Thanks for all your positive thoughts and good wishes :luv:, much appreciated :D

Title: Re: William is having a small operation - further update page 4 - poorly boy
Post by: elaine.e on October 09, 2010, 01:13:24 PM
When I collected William from the vet yesterday afternoon the nurse failed to point out that they'd shaved a patch on his throat to take bloods. It's quite a large patch but pretty much hidden in his neck folds so I didn't notice it until late yesterday evening when he started scratching it. The patch was bright red and very, very sore looking :o so I bathed it with diluted Hibiscrub and did my best to stop him from clawing at it.

After a restless night I took him back to the vet this morning and he now has Fuciderm to help soothe and heal. I pointed out that whoever shaved him should have noticed that the hair on his throat is always a bit greasy looking and the skin pink and a bit roughened. He's had problems there before, which must be somewhere on his records, but it's obvious that the skin there is compromised and they should have noticed. I almost mentioned it to them yesterday morning when I dropped him off but I didn't think they'd be doing anything to his throat.

Poor Wills is feeling sorry for himself and isn't eating much at the moment. He's restless and keeps pottering about whimpering very softly :'( :'(. He's been like that before after anaesthetic so I'm not worried about how he's reacting, although it upsets me to see him so unhappy. I'm cross about the shaved patch though >:(.

The receptionist at the vet showed me that she's added a "warning" at the top of his records that he's not to be shaved there again unless absolutely necessary, so hopefully it won't happen again.

I can imagine how annoyed you are Elaine  >:(  It would have only taken a few more seconds for the vets to double check  ::)  I never realised they took blood from the neck & always thought it was from the paw.  :-\

Sorry to hear William's recovery is being made more difficult because of this.  Its so annoying when things like this happens when all it would've taken is another 5-10 minutes to read his complete history and formulate a different strategy.... vets at times drive me nuts  >:D >:D

Hope William's neck heals up ok, and the actual area where they operated heals quickly for him. Send gentle squidges for your gorgeous boy  :bigarmhug:

I'd be upset too about them doing something you'd not agreed to or known about.

TBH the soreness on his neck'll be bothering him more than the op I would have thought too.
Morgan had pyoderma, so his skin would go greasy and clump the fur together, so you do have to be careful with it.

Kisses to the poorly boy  :-*

Really pleased that the vets have now annotated his notes, so you can be reassured that nothing like this should happen again  ;)

I have lost count of the number of times I have almost said something and then either forgotten to say, or felt like it was fussing or whatever, only for it to become evident that if I had said what I intended, a subsequent problem would never have arisen - and I know I feel very angry with myself for the whole matter, so I hope you are being kind to yourself Elaine.

I don't know how many vets and vet nurses work at your practice, nor how substantial William's notes are, but these factors might go some way to explain why the team operating on him yesterday may have been unaware of the previous medical history  :dunno:  I am so sorry that this incident has happened to William, and I guess the cautionary tale for us all is never to assume that the person treating your pet knows everything about them and their- actually that applies in our own interactions with our doctors as well - not least because they are only human  :D

Gentle hugs to William and I hope that Louis is being sensitive to his big brother's predicament.

He's become a lot more relaxed in the last few hours  with no more whimpering and pacing, although every so often he suddenly gets up and trots a few paces with his tail down before trying to scratch his sore patch. But even that is now only once or twice every hour, which is a big improvement.

I bathed the area with diluted Hibiscrub, patted it dry and applied some Fuciderm immediately before feeding him at about 6.00pm. Feeding him straight afterwards distracted him from wanting to scratch immediately. Fingers crossed for a better night than last night :D

William was left in the tender care of OH today while Louis and I were at a show and I've just got back and checked him to find that most of the sore patch is looking a lot less pink and is dry, but he must have scratched one area of it which has bled slightly and looks swollen >:(

I'll Hibiscrub then Fuciderm it shortly and watch him like a hawk for the rest of the evening. He has another vet appointment tomorrow morning so I'll get it checked again then. Maybe he'll need some antibiotics to clear it?

My first Cocker had a large wart in the same area and it kept getting infected because he used to scratch it. He had the wart removed and an infection set in that took weeks to clear. Admittedly he was a much older dog and didn't recover from things quickly, but I don't William to get an infection there because I think it's a difficult place for healing anyway.

On the positive side, William has now fully recovered from the anaesthetic and still seems unaware of the suture under his chin :D

Poor William, he really has been in the wars but I'm glad to hear he is feeling a little better. :luv:

When Monty went in for his neuter whoever shaved his "boy bits area" took so much fur off that he ended up with razor burn, the whole area was incredibly red and weepy for days - my vet was beside herself and couldn't apologise enough - me thinks one of the vet nurses needs a lesson in how to shave a dog properly! ph34r

Please give William a big hug from Monty and me Elaine. x

Razor burn is pretty much how I'd describe William's shaved patch and he's now on antibiotics after another visit to the vet yesterday. About half the area is beginning to look better but the rest of it is still weepy and inflamed and it's infected all down one side. It doesn't seem to be irritating him as much though, so I think we're slowly winning.

I felt a bit sorry for Louis when William came home from his operation because he was delighted to see William and kept bouncing up and down in front of him and play bowing. William usually just ignores the attempts to play but was in a very grumpy and groggy state and growled and snapped at Louis without any preamble :o. Louis took the hint :005:

Since then things have been back to normal with the two of them not taking much notice of each other.

Monty had antibiotics too, plus some cream which helped although he wasn't too happy with me getting anywhere near his nether regions bless him. :005:  I hope the ABs do the trick and I'm glad that the boys are getting back to their normal selves!!

Hope William is feeling better soon. Taking blood from the neck seems to be a new thing, Uliss had it done earlier in the year. Seemingly the vet can get alot more blood in a quicker space of time thus reducing the stress of doing it slowly in the leg.

Uliss was really good at it but she is too scared to move at the vets. However Piglet was having none of it, in his usual "DON'T TOUCH ME" drama queen attitude and in the end they had to use his leg.

Good news

The vet has just phoned and confirmed that the lump was a harmless skin tag, which is what she thought anyway, but because it was on his lip it was safer to have it removed while it was tiny rather than waiting to see if it got bigger. If it had got bigger and had been cancerous poor William would have been in trouble.

His neck is healing nicely now, just a bit of infection left, so hopefully that will have cleared completely by Monday, which is when I take him to have the suture removed.

What a relief :D
