Whats the possibility (%) of a PRA affected pup?
« on: June 04, 2007, 11:34:34 AM »
Hi All

I've read loads on here about optigen testing, GPRA/PRA, and just wondered what the statistics are - how likely is it if a pup comes from a breeder, parents not tested, whats the statistics of it being affected?

How prolific is this disease?

Thanks for your advice in advance x

No-one could say for certain whether the pup would be clear, carrier or affected if neither parent has been Optigen tested  :-\.

Hi

Thanks for your replies. It was just a general question really - how much of a problem is PRA within the cocker population.

Lolajays - very useful site thanks, it was very good at explaining the probability of known carriers/non-carriers.

Cayley - I realise nothing is ever 100% and it would be a huge risk taking a dog with no idea of its DNA/PRA background, but I was just wondering if there was a statistical percentage of that risk.

Thanks for your time

Optigen do release statistics based on Cockers tested which show how many afflicteds there are in relation to carriers and normals. Obviously these figures only relate to tested dogs but enough have been tested now to give a reasonably good picture of the situation within the breed. I don't have exact figures to hand but there are a high proportion of carriers within the breed - from what I remember the number of carriers and clears are quite similar with a smaller number of afflicteds. It's impossible to quantify the risk of an afflicted being produced by untested parents but with a high carrier population, there is inevitably some risk.

Thanks Jane - sounds like quite a prolific disease.

No not really a prolific disease but now there's a DNA test available, there is no excuse for any breeder to produce an affected Cocker ever again. However, this test is expensive so as usual, it's only the small minority of responsible breeders who will bother doing it.
