Hendrix's spinal surgery - UPDATED!
« on: February 19, 2009, 04:15:57 PM »
Our two-and-a-half year old Hendrix suddenly lost the use of his hind legs and bladder on Monday. Following an emergency MRI scan and spinal surgery in which he had a disc removed, he is now resting in The Queen Mother Hospital at the Royal Veterinary College and has been fitted with a catheter until he regains control of his bladder. We will be allowed to see him on Saturday for an hour. We have been told he has started to eat a little and there is some evidence he has movement in his hind legs. He can stand on his front legs if they support his rear end, and he is starting some physio. To add to all this, the disc that was removed contained more blood than expected, so they have told us that analysis will reveal if it is a clot or even a tumour, but they cannot say yet.

I would really appreciate some success stories please. Right now it fels like such a long way for Hendrix to go to fully recover. He is likely to need up to four weeks total rest in a crate, and it is so hard to imagine how he will cope with everything - he is the bounciest dog in the world! Please let us know of any experience you may have that will help Hendy and us to cope with all this. Thank you.

Angie

My last Golden Cocker, Benjie, lost the use of his back legs when he was eight years old.  After various X rays I was informed that he had a lesion on his spine.  His vet said that he would treat it conservatively, and Benjie was prescribed prednisolone.

The poor little guy used to drag himself along the floor and it quite upset me.  Indeed, although he wasn't allowed on the furniture I ended up putting him on the sofa.  Benjie enjoyed all of this attention, and because he wouldn't take tablets easily I bought him fish fingers and chicken rather than his Frolic.  The first time I gave him Asda's fish fingers he resolutely refused to eat them.  However, the Bird's Eye fingers he walloped down, and I ended up having the Asda variety.

Some weeks later Benjie made a complete recovery, and never had a relapse.  He was put to sleep in 1998 at the age of sixteen years.  Following this illness it became his inalienable right to sleep on the settee.

I'm sure Hendrix will soon recover and wrap you around his little paws.

No experience just wanted to send you lots of love and kisses and wish Hendrix well  :luv: :luv: I know it is NOT the same but I had a disc removed and I have made a full recovery so I imagine in dogs it can be the same  ;)
The reason dogs have so many friends is because they wag their tails instead of their tongues.
