Bailey is Barking at other Dogs
« on: April 11, 2006, 01:32:02 PM »
Hey Guys, (One for Mark  :D )
Just after your thoughts on this one, its not a major problem and has only happened a few times but we really want to nip it in the bud.

Bailey is usually fine with other dogs off lead and has a bit of a sniff then decides the bushes and grass are more interesting and he will leave them alone. He does sometimes bark at other dogs when he is on the lead but he is getting better.

But we were out in the park the other day and he said hello to another dog and started wondering off like he does but the dog came over to me for a fuss... Bailey did not like this and started barking and chased him off. It wasn't a full on im going to kill you type af bark more a moaning i want type.

Am I inforcing it by trying to take his attention away from the other dog by getting him to sit or down or should we just ignore him like we are with the barking in the house which is finally started to pay off.

Any comments,

Thanks Guys

I'd only just seen this too.
Seems like he is jealous of sharing your attention with others, I've never experienced this out and about so don't know what the best suggestion would be, gut instinct tells me distraction rather than reprimand.

As you said yourself, one for Mark maybe  ;)

Sorry Jim, it's called essay in for college next week syndrome is why I haven't replied.
Just seen this and I wouldn't worry too much.
I wouldn't reinforce him for barking but if he performs a behaviour that you want then go for it.
Some dogs do suffer from jealousy and Bailo I'm sure sees you as a valued resourse which he don't want no other pooch butting in on.
He sounds like he's defending what's his from an outsider, which is sort of natural canine behaviour.
If the barking wasn't threatening I would pesonally ignore it give the other dog a quick fuss and move on and then call Bailo to me and give him a fuss after he is quiet.
Reward the good behaviour, and being around you if he is resource guarding you is obviously a high value reward for him.
Hope this makes sense and sorry once again for the late reply.
Hope you guys are all ok now. Give Bailo a big hug and fuss from me.

sorry jim and kate, honest i never saw this but in my defence i have had an awful week ph34r
no advice either as pads could bark for britain and millie is rapidly following in his footsteps.the difference is,paddy does it to wind me up(honest)and mills does it coz she can now.she thinks its a very clever new trick.so who am i to tell her different, not that she would listen anyway.she thinks it's great.
it does sound like jealousy.has it got worse since tyler was with you?he may think any other dog is going to move in and it would settle in time when he realised thats not the case :shades:or is it? :005:
