Mikey Screaming
« on: November 01, 2006, 09:29:31 AM »
We are getting on well with our lead training, the sporn harness is great and makes it so much less of an effort for both of us.

But instead of pulling Mikey has started screaming.  I have been using the same method to stop the screaming as I have to stop pulling which is the stop/start method but I can stand in one place for ages whilst Mikey screams his head off.  It's like he's venting his frustration about not being able to pull through screaming and I mean screaming!!.

Any idea's?

What does screaming sound like - is it like yelping?

Honey is barking non stop at the minute at everything - it is driving me absolutely mad.

I don't have any advice but will be interested to see what others come up with ;)

It is a kind of yelping Kb, it actually sounds like he's being murdered tbh.  He can be walking along perfectly fine and an almighty scream pops out - really strange, but I think he gets over excited.  He sometimes does it when chasing a bird, it's like a bark but higher pitched and all rolled into one.

He's never make a proper working gundog, he's too noisy.

No advice Miche but goodness me that must be annoying!!!

Barney does the opposite when wearing a harness and anything that is designed to stop him pulling - he jsut sits down and refuses to move - it means that a quick 10 minute walk can take hours!!!!!  :005:  :005:

Sorry no useful advice but hope soemone can help!

I tried the watch me command earlier and it is one of the rare times he doesn't do it :o

You have given me an idea though, I think I will try clicker training to do watch me everytime he screams - do you think this might work?

I hope he stops it because it's really really loud and he draws a lot of attention to us.

Molo tried this during the summer of last year  ::) ::)

It was worse if he could see someone in front of him (he was still going through his I want to meet everyone phase  >:()

I spent an extremely boring day off work with him on the lead walking along various beach Esplanades - stopping totally still when he screamed, and only moving off when he was quiet; it took him about three (very humiliating) hours to work out the link between screaming and not getting his own way - but once he grasped it, he stopped almost straight away

Can't remember how old Molo is Rachel ph34r, but Mikey is 18 months and I think it might be that he's still going through his "I want to meet everyone stage".  He looks like a manic dog when on a lead, not that he's pulling he's just acting crazy with his screaming.  He's not at all like that really he's quite placid - lead walking is definately not showing his best side.

I will keep on trying to get him out of it.

Yup, about the same age  ::) I remember it being really humiliating ; I took him to places full of tourists in the hope I wouldn't see anyone I knew  :005:

Hmmm, it is rather humiliating.  Luckily I have been walking quite early in the morning and not encountered many people :005:.

Whatever Mikey does Herbie tends to do a few weeks later ::), but at least if I overcome it with Mikey I should be able to sort Herbie out quite quickly :-\
