Hope he's doing well now- have you looked into physio for him? Our working cocker with hip trouble did well after treatment and they taught us a few exercises to do with him that seemed to keep spasms at bay. Maybe worth thinking about- it was all to do with stretching the back legs before exercise, just in the way athletes do.

My oldie WCS is having physio at the moment and acupuncture (done at same practice) with a view to cutting back and eventually getting rid of the metacam plus we have exercises to do at home
