Your OH has the right idea; but it will take more than a day for Arnie to learn ;)

He will (eventually) work out that you will only take him out if he sits nicely to have his lead put on, and that running around barking doesn't get him what he wants  ;)

Same thing here, Indie goes mental but until she sits still, we don't go anywhere.   She has to sit whilst I put the lead on, she is still quivering and shaking with excitement but she forces herself to sit still til the lead goes on - we got there quicker doing this with the clicker  :D

If they are reacting so excitedly to having the lead out, then the best thing is to have the lead out all the time, and use other 'cue' words to get them ready -  no big deal really, they are just so up for it, that it makes you feel a complete heel for making them wait doesn't it !!  When you are ready to go, just use another command, like Sit, and make them sit until their lead is on, and then Go !!  Unless you are like Bramble, in which case, anyone gets into a car, and he's there in the front seat - no-one goes anywhere if he's not there with them, just in case they stop off at the footy fields or the meadows ... bless !

I would teach a rock solid down stay in a particular place then do the same with the lead visible and build this up to you being able to go and get the lead then put it on.
you will need to do this over a matter of weeks or months.
You could also put a house lead on your dog  then take it off and put it on frequently which would have no consequence for your doggie.
This may help him to learn that the lead does not always mean something exciting.
Work on your dogs self control by doing lots of waits and stays by doorways and for food.
Dogs really benefit from learning a little patience.

Millie reminds me of a salmon leaping up stream when I get her lead, she launches of the stairs while wagging her whole body at the same time  :lol2:

the only time Mali will sit still to have her lead on is at bedtime when she goes out for her last pee. I imagine that's because she knows she's only going on the garden? When trying to put her harness on, she's a nightmare! She will sit with no trouble at all but when I try to put the thing over her head, she grabs the bottom of it in her mouth. It takes several attempts and lots of disiplining before we get out the door. Luckily for me time isn't an issue so I can just wait till she's willing to be good but I do hope it will get better as she gets older?
