Title: Forum Error Reports
Post by: stueymac on November 11, 2009, 03:05:24 PM
Please post here when you experience forum errors of any kind (when you can get back on the forum that is!)
Errors worth reporting include: Broken links, 'cannot connect' and 'mysql errors', basically anything that affects use of the forum or denies you access to the forum generally.

When reporting it would be useful to know the following information, I know it's a big ask but it would help lots if you could note down some specifics then report when you can log back in.

Date and time of error
Any error messages that were shown
The browser you are using to surf the net (IE6/7 or 8, Firefox, Google Chrome etc)
Were you able to connect to the homepage www.cockersonline.co.uk whilst the forum was unavailable or were they both offline.

Any info you can provide is much appreciated.

Stu
(with tech support hat on - but I also make the coffee)

Same error messages as Mrs T (posted a few minutes ago) at the same time as she had them.

I've been on COL for short periods about 5 times today and each time it's been very slow when I want to post a reply or move to a different part of the forum.

The connection has timed out

The server at www.cockersonline.co.uk is taking too long to respond.

    *   The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
          moments.

    *   If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
          connection.

    *   If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I am now getting this in a new CoL tab, rather just on links. I have col bookmarked, so it is easy to refresh, but perhaps too many of us are doing it. It is definitely a problem with this forum only, as all others I use are super fast. I use Windows 7 and Firefox on a laptop or PC

I wonder if the other forums you use have as many members & visitors as this one? I know I visit a couple of other big forums (and moderate on one other) and sometimes it is v slow on these forums at certain times of the day. As with any busy site, sometimes server capacity is a problem and I know Stu is currently investigating server options with the aim of improving the situation re server time-outs. All we can do in the meantime is ask that you be patient with occasional problems accessing the forum at certain times of the day (I just go away and do something else and it's usually fine again 5 mins later :D)

TBH Ian that sounds like a cookie problem rather than a forum issue. If it happens again, delete your COL cookie and start afresh (also delete all your temp internet files) - that usually solves this kind of thing.

I have had problems connecting to COL all day yesterday  7/5/10. Google chrome could not connect to server  >:D . However, i am back on today.

Graeme

That's odd as I was on here at various times yesterday and there were no problems at all. I think sometimes when people can't connect, it's not really a COL issue as such - sometimes it's a browser fault or the user's ISP is having a temporary blip, all sorts of possibilities really. If you are having trouble connecting persistently (other than the odd server time out at busy times of the day), it's always worth trying another browser or having a good clear out of your temporary internet files & giving it another go.

Connection Problems

Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

Have been doing some Admin work today and not noticed any problems today but as previously stated, there will be the occasional database busy messages at certain times of the day but these don't last long (not usually more than a few minutes).

Have been having more and more probs with connection lately for some reason. It has always done it on occasion, but does seem more frequent. Just typed a long PM to someone and when I went to spellcheck it chucked me off, lost my PM and wouldn't let me back on. I guess I should have just trusted my spelling.  :shades: :005:

That's more likely to have been a time-out error - ie you took too long to send your PM so the session timed out ;) If you do have a long PM to write, it might be better to type it out first in Notepad or something and then copy & paste into the PM text box.

Oh god I didn't know there was a time limit.  :shades: :005: I can't type or think at that time in the morning that fast.   :005: My Dad also said to type it up somewhere else and then copy and paste it Jane, so I think I will do that next time  Cheers. ;) I do still think the connection probs seem to be more frequent for some reason though.   or maybe I'm just always to slow.  :shades: :005:

Can you let me know when this was? As far as I can see the forum was definitely not off-line for 3 hours yesterday so if some people are experiencing this and others aren't, we'll need to investigate further as the errors do not seem to be affecting all members at the same time.

Thanks,

I know the server has tripped over a few times these last couple of weeks, cause yet unknown.
Will keep tinkering (sometimes just the forum goes other times it's been the whole site)

I get it quite often too. I think it's just the site being too big and needing more internet space :). It usually gets cleared quite quickly from my experience.

I first noticed it just after 7 pm, tried to get on a few times with the same result and then, just after 8, everything seemed fine.

The forum was hacked earlier this evening. Stuart has done a fantastic job to get it back up and running so quickly but will need to do further work in the next few days to make sure there are no residual problems or security issues so please be patient if it is offline for short periods while he does this.

I've started getting the "resource limit reached" message again. It's happened to me several times over the last few days, most recently at about 7.50 am today.

Yesterday I had a problem when trying to post something. Typed it out as usual, pressed post, nothing happened for several seconds, then a message appeared on screen from fusionhost (?) saying that the forum had been moved to another server. Can't remember what time that was, so perhaps it was when Stuey was fixing things yesterday.

The "resource limit reached" error happened again when I first tried posting this at 08.10 am.

This resource limit issue was caused by our older forum version on the new server, this shouldn't happen now (he said optimistically!!)

Yes, I got in contact with Stu when I saw that fusionhost message and since then as the system has gone down I've been posting on Cockers on Facebook to try and keep people in the loop.

Sorry you had such a sh1te weekend Stu! and thanks for taking the time and sorting it out   :D

Basically the server developed a fault, the site had to move to a new server, the new server didn't like our old forum so we had to update the latest version of SMF (which we would have had to do eventually anyway but still)
Unfortunately the donator badge thing isn't working on the new version so am trying to sort that somehow.
However we're still getting resource limit problems so at some point we may need to move COL again to a much bigger server.

Edited: The forum 'look' isn't ours, it's SMF's, I'm reluctant to change anything about how the forum looks until we're sure everything is working. For now it either looks this way or it's not here at all, sorry folks.

This evening from 9-45pm till just after 10-00pm.

I've noticed a few small delays in connecting lately but this evening I was accessing COL at the time and it just refused to load a new page and displayed the above message when I tried reconnecting. Other sites accessed quite normally during the COL outage.

UPDATE. Tried previewing the above prior to sending and quite a delay in displaying the preview.
