Title: 10 week old puppy with entropion
Post by: Loobyjules on May 24, 2013, 06:03:33 PM
Hi out there.
Took my 10 week old beautiful cocker " boris" for his last injections today to be told he has entropion!
The vet is now wanting to refer to ophthalmologist for treatment and surgery. The thing is I saw a different vet last week that said she thought it was loose lids, tested his eyes with dye to check for damage( which was clear) and said she thought as he grew he would grow out of it and to wait.Who do I listen too? His eyes are a little watery look slightly pink but don't seem to bother him. Also if he has the surgery will it change his facial looks..advice please for an upset new cocker owner. :-(

Coco had the same.  My vet recommended waiting until she was a year old to see if it righted itself as she grew.  In the end, it didn't and she had the op which was perfectly successful  ;)

Unless it is severe, I would be very loathe to think of potentially uneccesary trips to specialists/surgery etc for such a young pup. :dunno:

It probably wouldn't hurt to have an eye specialist take a look - after all, they know more than a vet in general practice.  You will then have more information to make an informed decision.  Hope it turns out that he doesn't need the op, at least until he is older.  :bigarmhug:

Hi, my Tilly has the same but only in one eye (the other has healed itself). The vet said to wait till she's older and when i spoke to the breeder she said the same and they have so much growing to do it can correct itself.
sending  :bigarmhug: as i know it can be a stressful time x x

I would also see what the ophthamologist says. He is the eye specialist

I would want to see the ophthalmologist rather than wait, after all if an eye is red then it must be uncomfortable.

One of our cockers, Moss had entropion when he was a pup, the breeder phoned a couple of weeks before we were due to collect him. She said we didn't have to take him but he was already our dog so we said we still wanted him. the day we collected him we took him to her vets and he advised on what op would be needed. the following week he saw our own vet who suggested an alternative. at 10 weeks his eyes were gathered and stitched to pull the lid outward and the stitches remained in place for approx 6 months. he was not cut at all and it has worked in both eyes. he was not bothered by the process at all and he is now 2 and no ill effects and still gorgeous. I can totally understand your worry and fears with your new pup but for Moss it worked out really well.

Jinley also has it, but the vet says that because her eyes droop it does not irritate her as much as it would.

They do not want to operate on her unless she starts to get sore and regular eye infections.  I was gutted when I was told and cried all the way home from the vets.

She is due to be spayed in October and they said they would have a good look whilst she is under anesthetic as she hates having her eyes messed with now after all of the checks and drops.

Thanks for your comments guys.
Boris is at the vets tomorrow where it will be decided what the best course of action is.
My little man is totally unaffected by this "entropion" and I'm hoping they've got it wrong and its just excess puppy skin on his face! As he is particularly baggy!!!
