Title: Aspen might need an op
Post by: *Jay* on June 09, 2006, 02:40:45 PM
Since early yesterday Aspen has been limping intermittently. He is fine when walking but when running or using stairs he holds his paw up. He was still having problems this morning so I got one of the vets to have a look and after a lot of prodding and poking, the conclusion is that he has a foreign body in his paw. I have to give him over the weekend to see if it pops out itself but if not, he will need an op to investigate on Monday.

He timed it very well actually as it means he can't go in for his first show tomorrow ;) His coat is nowhere near ready so that was very handy :005: We can now just relax and spectate (and shop!!) instead....stress-free

Aaaah poor little man.  Hope he's better soon.

And your a very naughty cocker mummy blaming him for your depleted bank balance after the show - you'd have spent money anyway I bet  ;) :005:  I remember your Doggy christmas present tally  :005: :005: :005:

Aw, poor Aspen  :luv:

Penel has recommended a homeopathic remedy in the past for drawing out foreign bodies - I'll see if I can find the thread

Edited to add: found it (linky) (http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=10986.0)! Penel said Homeopathic Silica (6c) pillules (tablets) - you should be able to pick it up in any good Boots or Holland and Barratt - draws out foreign bodies from tissue..... :D

gill, do you show any of your other dogs?

No - Dallas is too small & Disney managed 1 show before he lost his nose pigment. Aspen now has a reprieve until August for his first show so as long as his nose stays black we should be fine ;)

I hope he improves over the weekend.

Something we always used to use for splinters and things when we were little, was sugar and soap.  Used to draw them out within a few hours and worked every time!  Not sure how practical it would be for a dog's paw though!!  :-\ :005:

Although there is no show coming up  ;), he has been showing signs of lameness again. Not as severe as the last occasion but it is definitely there. TBH, I've been watching him closely the past couple of weeks and I have noticed that he appears to walk funny with regards to his front legs but I can't put my finger on what it is  I think I will have to make an appt for the vets at the weekend and get him checked out :-\

He went to the vets this evening and it seems he has a problem with his right elbow. He is to have anti-inflammatories and restricted exercise for 2 weeks then he has to go back. If no improvement, then it will be x-rays etc

Went back to the vets this evening with Aspen and he has to go in tomorrow for x-rays :-\ When its their first anaesthetic, i worry myself to the point of a nervous breakdown ph34r. The vet is quite concerned that it has gone on as long as it has (4 weeks) and that there was absolutely no improvement with the Rimadyl. He is going to be looking for developmental problems with the elbow and/or the shoulder and if that is all clear, then it will be a further months rest with stronger medication ::)

The vet we got this evening was lovely and I was just thinking away to myself what a  :luv: he was, then he said that Aspen was FAT :o So now I think he's just a good looking  >:D :005: :005:and a bloody cheeky one at that  ;)

My goodness, the waiting is dreadful :-\ I phoned at 2pm (after worrying all morning that he was going to die under anaesthetic and giving myself a heart attack every time my mobile went!) to be told that he was just in the process of being done so to phone back at 4pm! Ah well - I'm at work today so keeping myself busy and I managed to sneak away to the butchers to buy chicken for his special tea ;)

The baby is home and has tucked into his chicken. The problem seems to be his shoulder but it is only a bad sprain as opposed to anything like OCD. His medication has been changed to Metacam and he has to go back in 2 weeks for another check up.

I saw this last night but couldn't post Gill, I'm sorry.

I have been thinking of you though, and I know how hard today must have been.

I'm glad he's home safe and sound and that at least you haven't had any bad news. But it is frustrating isn't it.

I must say that with all my years in Orthopaedic nursing I have often found that a sprain can take longer to heal than a fracture. So I hope Aspen will be more comfortable with the new meds, and soon be fit and well.

btw: the vet saying he's fat!!!!!! How can you keep his weight down when you have to rest him anyway? ;)

I must say that with all my years in Orthopaedic nursing I have often found that a sprain can take longer to heal than a fracture.

Tell me about it, poor Wilf is still onlead walks only (since Easter saturday) and hydrotherapy after his 'crash' with the collie (he's off to the vet referral centre in Swansea in 3 weeks if its no better).

Hope Aspen gets well soon

I must say that with all my years in Orthopaedic nursing I have often found that a sprain can take longer to heal than a fracture.

Vegas had a similar injury when he was running and slipped on his 1st birthday ph34r That took forever to heal as well . In Aspens case I think the vet was concerned that I hadn't seen or heard him injure himself and it had come on suddenly. But at least now I know what we are dealing with so we will just get on with it. He was soooo sleepy and calm yesterday, it was great  However he is back to normal today although he is even more lame due to all the manipulation of his leg yesterday ::) He hopes his fellow sufferer Wilf gets better soon too ;) Its just no fun being stuck on the lead >:(
