a couple of weeks ago we realised that puppy gypsy had a lump on her tail, took her to our regular vet who said that it was dislocated, we were devastated as gypsy was supposed to be shown, but first and foremost they are pets and we love them so we came to terms with this. :'(
we have tried in vain to splint the tail in an attempt to get it to grow as straight as possible, more for her comfort in the long run really.
Anyway today noticed that the skin was looking sore at the point of dislocation and that it was causing her discomfort. We were a little unhappy with the response from our vet the first time we took her regarding her tail and when i rang this afternoon was told that my vet couldnt see her till tomorrow >:(
anyway on the advise of many friends have taken her to an alternative vets this afternoon and saw a lovely vet....to cut a long story short she has told me that the tail needs amputating just above the break, (about an inch or so off the end) as the skin is starting to break down and within a few days it could be very infected and also she was in so much pain by the time we got there and even growled and went to bite the vet ph34r....i asked for a second opinion of another vet there and within a few minutes 2 other vets came to see us, took xrays and confirmed her diagnosis.
im devastated, but not just for the tail....my main concern is the anaesthetic on a 14 week old pup.....im in bits, cant stop shaking and crying, i know it has to be done but i dont want to take her in the morning :'( :'( :'(
-
Anaesthetics are much better these days even for small pups (some rescues here in the UK and particularly in the US neuter cats and dogs at this age so they do regulrly use them without ill effect + with age on her side she'll recover very quickly). I can imagine an op like this will be relatively quick as well so less time under. Hope all goes well.
-
I think the best thing to think about in these cases is the alternative - in this case infection, suffering, then operation anyway. Best to get it over and done with, with the least amount of suffering for her. I suspect she wont be under for long, and puppies recover extremely quickly, she will be back to her normal self within days and you will be asking for advice on how to keep her quiet!
I know how difficult it is for you, hugs for tomorrow for both of you.

god i hope so, im a mess right now i cant even begin to think how im gonna feel tomorrow
-
I'm sure she will be fine :D
I have a friend showing a dog who was docked for medical reasons since the docking ban.
She cannot show at shows people pay to visit but she does show and has had some lovely wins.
I'm sure the lady involved would speak to you if you still wanted to show further down the line.
Reason I mention it is it may be wise to get a letter from the vet who does the opp so you have evidence if you ever wanted to get permission to show from the KC. I don't think it was easy but is was possible.
-
Oh I do really feel for you :'( How awful for the poor little girl. I hope everything goes well for you and little Gypsy and that she makes a speedy recovery. Will be thinking of you both :luv: :bigarmhug: xxx
-
She will feel so much more comfortable once this is sorted out. That's a good thought, yes?
They will look after her. They will be kind and gentle, and she will get the right care. That's another good thought.
Right now she needs you to be as normal as you can manage, you don't want her picking up on your distress, so do try for her sake if you possibly can, although it is difficult for you.

thankyou, a friend has mentioned this too so will defo get a letter from the vet and look into this in the future.....im just so concerned about the anaesthetic right now i cant even think straight....

i know you're right and im gonna try, am now giving her, her favourite dinner (puppy kibble with warm water tuna and a little chicken) then take her for a little walk.......just cant it out of my head that if something goes wrong could be my last walk with her
-
Poor little Gypsy, hope the op goes well and she will be back to her bouncy puppy self soon :luv:
-
Such a shame :'(
But as others have said this needs sorting. Anaesthetics are much safer these days and just think how much better she will be.
It is distressing for us when our pets have to have an op but you have to try and not pass this on to her.
Gypsy will be fine. :bigarmhug: for you.
-
Poor little mite :'(
Definitely best to get it done before complications from infection etc set in but I do understand your worry about the anaesthetic. Will be sending lots of positive thoughts her way tomorrow - I hope it all goes smoothly for her and that the next thread you post will be asking how to keep her quiet while her tail heals ;) :luv:
-
Awww what a shame, poor little love :'( Lots of love and best wishes for an easy op and a speedy recovery :luv: x
-
Will be thinking of you and Gypsy tomorrow and wishing her a speedy recovery.
As others have said, try not to worry - easier said than done I know. :bigarmhug:
-
Poor little one.
I agree with the others, that anaesthetics these days are much safer than before.
She will be under only for a little while, so she won't be given too much anaesthetic.
You will be fine knowing that she is under the best care that she can get.
Sending to you and Gypsy positive and healthy vibes for a speedy operation
and a speedy recovery.

I agree - they cope with this stuff much better than we do. Main thing is to get it sorted asap and they she will be on the road to recovery and your problem will be how on earth to keep her quiet while she recovers! :shades: :005:
Good luck tomorrow. :bigarmhug:
-
Oh no, poor little baby! I can sympathise so much with both of you because Jonny had the same operation a couple of years ago. I have to say it was a very stressful time for both of us :( His poor tail became necrotic at the tip after it had been injured by too enthusiastic wagging against furniture, radiators etc. The vet removed about five inches (probably a similar ratio of tail to what wee Gypsy has to lose). He's absolutely fine now and doesn't seem to miss it.
I'm sure Gypsy will come through it all just fine. As others have said, the anaesthetics are so much lighter these days. And in the end she'll have a dear little tail that you'll hardly see the difference.
-
Cockers never used to have tails. It's all for the right reason. She will be fine. X
-
Poor Gypsy and poor you too!
Sure all will be well for her. ;)
Will be thinking about you both :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Gypsy for tomorrow. Positive and healing thoughts are on their way .
Take care,
Love,
Gwyneth Colin and Megan XXX
-
Sending both you and Gypsey lots of healing :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: and :luv: :luv: for tomorrow
-
If it's any help. my darling Zara had a knee op at 20 weeks, She weighed just 5 pounds at the time. I was terrified but she was fine after a little while,
I know you will worry yourself sick until you have her back in your arms. Big hugs to you and focus on her recovery.
-
Oh poor Gypsy :bigarmhug: and poor you :bigarmhug: it is so upsetting for you both......but the alternative could be very much worse :o I have no experience of anaesthetics in pups but i have in new borns (babies), they are given the minimum, and have never been safer(although not without risk),and recover so quickly  i'm sure Gypsy will be back to normal in no time ;) Sending lots of positive vibes, and prayers, her way :-*
-
:bigarmhug:
-
thanks guys.....i know its for the best and i knew i could rely on you lot to make me feel a little better :luv:
-
Ebonygirl don't worry she will be fine as the others have said it will be a quick operation :luv: the vets wouldn't do it unless absolutely necessary.
Big :bigarmhug: for you and little :-* for gypsy good luck for tommorrow. x x x love Dianne
-
:bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:'s for you and Gypsy..... will be thinking of you tomorrow. I can imagine how hard it is for you right now, but this time tomorrow I'm sure it will all be sorted and your girl will be back home with you enjoying very special snuggles with you... Sending lots of positive vibes for Gypsy for a speedy recovery :luv: :luv: :luv:

Poor little pupster :'( But, can I just say that Odie had about an inch off his tail when he was only weeks old, due (apparently) to a littermate damaging it. It unfortunately has a hook still at the end which was really noticeable until he was around 7 months old. However, when his feathering appeared, it was NOT noticeable at all, his tail is just a little shorter than a full tail and it certainly causes him no problems ;) Good luck! Lesley
-
Tali was put out for the grass seed the other day. He had the injection and 10 minutes later he was spark out and having the seed removed. Before the vet finished he gave him an injection to bring him round. He was waking up within 10 minutes and trotting along in 20. They can bring them out much faster if required. It's not going to take long if you think of what they are actually doing. Maybe a 10 minute op tops.
Gypsy will be fine :bigarmhug:

thankyou, thats really good to hear....shes otherwise fit and healthy so i just hope the anaesthetic doesnt cause her any problems....i know its better to do it now before it possibly gets infected as then we'll have more problems and she wont be as healthy for the anaesthetic..... i just want it all over now and cant wait for that wonderful phonecall to say shes awake and well x x
-
i know most of you have been through some sort of op with your fur babies, thats why i knew it was the right thing to do to tell you guys about this as i had a feeling i'd get plenty of positive thoughts and prayers....and for this i am eternally grateful, you have all made me feel so much better, even though im now in tears because of everyones kindness......god, im useless tonight (im not usually such a sap) ;)
-
Oh poor you they look so vulnerable don,t they so young .
My lottie had a small lump removed under GA at 16 weeks old and she was fine up and about in no time . I was a mess like you really worried but that's my nature . Didn't do lottie much good thou she didn't understand why I was so upset . Try to relax a bit they will look after her . Please let us know how she gets on x :luv:
-
Will be thinking of little Gypsy tomorrow. She will be fine and she will soon be back in your arms all safe and well.
-
Oh poor Gypsy and you. Sending positive and healing thoughts to you both. :bigarmhug:
-
Lots of positive thoughts for tomorrow :-*
-
Sending big :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: for you both tomorrow. It doesn't matter how old they are it doesn't stop us worrying :luv:
-
:'( :'( Poor Gypsy and poor you...massive big :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: to you both...
Im sure you are worried and upset I would be too...
Stella my boxer didnt have her tail docked properly (when it was legal) and had to have an op at 4 months due to major discomfort and the end kept opening up too. The hardest part was keeping the bandage on when they are feeling better a couple of days later and wagging their tail again >:( :lol2: Stella rapidly recovered and thrived thereafter...Im sure Gypsy will be the same...
Will be thinking of you both in the days to come....
-
Poor little Gypsy....... big :bigarmhug: for tomorrow.

Sending big :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: for you both tomorrow. It doesn't matter how old they are it doesn't stop us worrying :luv:

the kindness and love of all things furry on here never ceases to amaze me...thankyou x

I don't know if this helps any but we had to have a groin hernia operated on on a 5 week old puppy. It was really a case of risk the operation or the hernia could have strangulated and we could have lost the puppy anyway. It was a very, very hard day the day that the baby went in for the op but the vet was wonderful and really knew his stuff. The baby was fine and full of beans when she came home at the night time. We are thinking about you here :luv:

Awww wishing all goes well tomorrow
Can I just say tho (hopefully to put your mind at ease regarding the anesthetic)
Fern was 9 weeks old when she had to have one due to breaking her jaw - I hate to say this but she is still a little mix and is now 5 years old - I blame the anesthtic and not my training LOL

-
Awwww sp sorry to hear about poor little Gypsy's tail :'( so sad.
I can completely understand your fears and disappointment ~ but you must just remind yourself it is for the best!
I know this is nowhere the same, but when Roux (our mini yorkie) had to go in to be spayed about a month ago I was an absolute bag of nerves!! I was convinced something would go wrong with the anaesthetic :-\ and my biggest concern was her size! Altho she is two years old today she is very very small, defo smaller than Gypsy is now and thats why I was worried. But it all went fine, its all very clinical and well measured and careful! Try not to worry (altho u will all day) just think happy thoughts and prepare yourself for lots of cuddles and tlc with her afterwards! Roux needed much love and attention following her op so we just did everything we could for her during her recovery.
Gypsy will be fine! Sending lots of luck and well wishes from this end to you both :luv:
Look forward to hearing good news of her recovery soon! :D xx

she's home.....eaten some dinner, had some painkillers and sound asleep on a fresh baby blanket next to me on the sofa..... :luv:
she's got the most massive bright pink wadding and bandage round her tail which freaks her out everytime she tries to wag her tail, and a lampshade......is it cruel to take a photo? :005:
on the whole i think she'll be fine, just a few day of TLC i reckon
-
Lovely to read that she's home & I'm sure, being spoilt rotten
-
Glad that she's home now and all went well. How much of her tail did they have to amputate?
-
Great news to hear everything went well and Gypsy's back at home. Lots of cuddles and being spoilt now :luv: :005:
-
:bigarmhug: so pleased she's home again. To see her comfortable enough to be eating after it all must be a huge relief to you. :luv:
-
That's fantastic news, now mummy you can stop worrying so much :luv: :luv: x x x big hugs and little :-* to gypsy.
-
I'm glad she's home safe and sound :luv: How much of the tail did they have to amputate?
-
not sure yet, as its all wrapped up and didnt get to speak to the vet on collection, the nurse said about an inch and a half........shes 14 weeks now and her tail was about half the length of ebonys full grown one so im thinking perhaps it will be about 3 inches shorter than ebonys when fully grown, what do you reckon??
-
:bigarmhug: glad all went well. Best wishes for a speedy recovery xx
-

I think that sounds like the right length calculation ;)
Apart from needing the documentation when you show her you and she won't even notice it ;) :luv: Jarv has a working dock which is half a tail and that is more than enough to wag and communicate and use as a rudder so I doubt whether she'll have any problems at all. Tails can be awful things to heal up and can split quite easily at the wound site but at this young age and with your vets being so good I bet they've compensated for bone removal and allowed enough skin to comfortably stitch the end for her :D
You will need to make sure her happy turbo tail is well protected until fully healed though :lol2: :luv:
-
I so sorry to hear this news. Try not to worry, I know thats stupid, but, as others have said, procedures these days are fine. Pup will be fine and will bounce back in no time. Try to remind yourself it is for the best and she will be a new dog. Thinking of you both
-
So glad it all went well :D :D
-
What a horrible time for you. So pleased that the op is over, and you have your wee one home :luv: Hoping she recovers very quickly. :bigarmhug:

Hopefully you can relax for a bit now :D
-
Great to hear Gypsys home and well :luv: :lol2:
-
Glad she is home, hope she heals quickly and is wagging her new tail very soon :luv: :luv: :luv:
-
gypsy is really grumpy today.....my DD is off school, and just went to stroke gypsy and she growled and went to nip at DD.......is this just because she's feeling alittle off sorts do you think???....or could she be in pain??...she cant have any painkiller till 6pm as its a once a day thing.
she's eating ok and didnt have too bad a night....(she slept with me in the spare room)
any ideas??
-
I would think she is feeling out of sorts from the GA...poor little girlie...probably best just to give her a bit of space for the time being...
:bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: to all and to Gypsy...
-
yeah thats what i thought, just wish she'd get comfy and go to sleep, i think half the problem is that she is tired ;)
-
So glad to hear she's ok! x
As for the grumpiness she's probably just feeling a bit groggy still from the anaesthetic and probably a little sore too. Just make sure everyone is very gentle with her and gain her trust back. She's such a tiny pup still and so the op and being messed about with by vets may have dented her confidence a little.
-
So glad to hear the op went well. I would think that she just needs a bit of peace and quiet for now. She must still be feeling all out of sorts. Sending big hugs to you both from us here :bigarmhug:
-
just been and bought her some salmon for tea and a new teddy from PAH......im thinking she may start to milk this if im not careful..........although my other cocker Ebony doesnt seem to mind as it means Gypsy is giving her a break and ebonys also having salmon for tea, well you cant give one without the other can you ;)
-
My 4 said can they come round and have salmon for tea too! Oh and I'll have to drive them round, so can I have salmon for tea as well!!!
-

haha are you far from great yarmouth, cause its nearly done!!
-
We are so pleased that Gypsy is home where she belongs. It will take a few days for the soreness to ware off but she will be fine in a week or so and back to being the beautiful puppy that she is.
Healing and positive thoughts and lots of hugs and kisses from us.
Love Gwyneth Colin and Megan xxxxxx
-
So pleased to hear that Gypsy is back home and on the mend
Lots of :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: to you both - you'll be so glad to have her home.
-
Hope both you have a better night and Gyspy happier and much impreved in the morning .Poor little girl
-
have put her back in her crate tonight, now im satisfied that shes not gonna strangle herselftrying to remove the lampshade and also that the anaesthetic is out of her system...... ;)
just one more thing though....she is particularly clingy today, she needs to be touching me at all times, has cried to come onto the sofa etc.....i have allowed this today and stayed in and cuddled her whenever shes wanted, is this normal after a trauma and should i continue to pander to her or in a few days shall i start to ignore whingy behaviour etc again...
sorry to keep asking for more reassurance and advice but the amount of experience on here is priceless.. :D
-
So glad she's home :D
While she's out of sorts, I personally would make a nice fuss of her. As she gets better withdraw slightly til it's normal service having been resumed. Often a good bond builds up when they have been ill and you show extra kindness ;)
-
Just been catching up on gypsys progress, glad she is on the mend :D
-
I'm sure she needs extra cuddles and reassurance. It's so difficult when you can't explain to them what's happening isn't it? And if you end up with a doggie that needs lots of cuddles, what's not to like? ;) :shades:
-
Think I would go the extra cuddles route too...after all it must be very confusing for her ...not being that old an all :luv:
Plenty of time for getting a bit tougher later on if you feel the need ;)
-
yeah, see you lot are of the same mind set as me....cuddles cuddles and more cuddles.......had to pop out today for an hour so my dad came round and sat with her....and gave her even more cuddles :luv:
poor little love is probably all cuddled out :005:
-
ebony went back to the vets tonight to have the bandage removed from her tail.......
it was a bit green and mushy and we were concerned it was infected but on closer inspection and after a good clean it seems fine.....only problem is that now the vets have taken off the bandage and left it off so that the wound dries out everytime she wags her tail or touches/knocks it shes yelping, crying and doesnt want to move anymore..... :'(
ive given her painkillers and she's asleep on the sofa at the minute, but i hate to see her in pain...shes so confused
-
Poor Ebony. You can't stop a cocker from wagging her tail. She will soon be feeling better and back to her happy self. Carry on with lots of cuddles and the pain killers and she will soon be better. :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: for Ebony and you
-
Have only just caught up this this. Poor Ebony and poor you
Glad she's home and on the mend. :bigarmhug: to you both
-
oooops...put ebony instead of gypsy.... :005: but thanks guys...

She's just a baby so she'll not be as stoical as an older dog. Poor wee pet. Give her lts of love and cuddles. Jonny sympathises - his tail is now quite recovered but it was horrid at the time.

Just found this one - cuddles to you and your baby. It's horrible watching them unhappy, you feel so helpless but she is on the mend now and will soon be running around happily again. :luv:

shes feeling much better this morning,....running around and eating normally....trying to keep her as calm as possible so have given her lots of toys, kongs etc on the rug because if she hits the tip of her tail on anything she will really cry, but hopefully in another couple of days or so the tenderness and sensitivity will ebb away...... :luv:

That's great news - so glad the little darling is feeling loads better. Give her a big kiss from me and Toby ;)

She certainly has a wonderful support team in you and your family. Once healed of course, she will forget all this...have you ever noticed that the one thing we can never remember once it is gone is pain...you remember what it was like, but not how it felt.
You have been a great mum, and she has a long and happy life with you to look forward to. (True story to my eternal shame (a feeling you can feel in remembering) is that I took Harvey to the vets because he didn't quite seem himself and caught an ear infection before it became obvious, yet missed the fact my daughter fractured her elbow in a fall because she had a graze there and it was a week before I got her to the hospital!)
