Title: Jeff behaving oddly - seeing things that aren't there?
Post by: JeffandAnnie on December 01, 2011, 06:27:11 PM
Can anyone help with what might be wrong with Jeff? He isn't settling and he keeps looking up and round, as if following watching something moving over his head. I've just picked him up from the sitter and apparently he's been doing it all day. He's panting a bit and his eyes are quite red (but that may be because he has spent the day circling and "watching" things rather than napping).

Has anyone come across this behaviour before? I've googled it but can't find anything.

He's just done it again - seemed to be dozing off then suddenly started, head came up and he "watched" the non-existant thing again  :-\

I'm quite worried about the little chap  :'(

The only thing that came to mind is a "brain episode" but without a seizure  :-\ (sorry if i scare you)

Can you get his attention while he is staring at the invisible object,or does he seem "somewhere else"

I know you would anyway but if it continues i would take him to the vet for a check up  ;)

I hope he settles soon.

We're back. Still not sure what's happening, but his pupils aren't reacting to light. He isn't showing any other signs of illness - gobbled up his dinner and is perfectly happy and waggy, doesn't have a temperature and heart and lungs are fine. The vet has taken bloods and is going to call back later tonight when the results are through. OH will take him to see the eye specialist tomorrow.

Vet just called, bloods are normal and she says it's unlikely to be a brain injury as she found no sign of this. OH is booked in to take him to the eye specialist at 13.40 tomorrow. I am wondering PRA, but his parents are tested clear

Now I've got myself in a right stew, googling the symptoms and finding some plants can cause them - apparently he was out in the garden much of the day at the sitters' house.
He is doing the weird hallucinating thing even more now, his pupils are dilated and not reacting to light, his tummy is gurgly, every time he tries to doze off he jumps out of his skin and wakes up again.

DOn't know whether to call a different vet for a second opinion - what do you think? sooo worried  :'(

Title: Re: Jeff behaving oddly - seeing things that aren't there?

did your vet question poisoning Liz? - if not, you could always give the out of hours a ring to give you peace of mind ...they'll be able to advise you properly, especially if you think it may be a possibility & if you won't rest for worrying tonight  ;)

stop googling hun - you'll only make yourself worry more  :bigarmhug:
Title: Re: Jeff behaving oddly - seeing things that aren't there?
Post by: MaggieR on December 01, 2011, 10:05:18 PM
I would give your vet that you've already seen a ring Liz and ask them whether they considered that option and if they did and discounted it, why exactly.  See if they can put your mind at rest - it may be thats what they tested for in the blood tests  :-\

He's managed to fall asleep now, so I'll leave it for the moment. Think I'll take him to bed now and we'll both try and get some kip - if he gets any worse I can call the vet then (doesn't cost any more at 2am than 10.30pm!)

I thin k she did consider poisoning as she mentioned mushrooms and I said he'd been in the garden during the day, but I guess the toxins would have shown in the bloods and there would have been other symptoms (such as high temperature, sensitive tummy, increased heart rate).

Thanks so much (again) for you support and kind words  :-*

Hello All,
Jeff is absolutely FINE  >:D

Little devil is because that's what he is - he is totally back to normal, pupils dilating and contracting, eyes fine, no panting or staring into space. I, however, have red eyes and feel exhausted after waking up every half an hour to check Jeff was still breathing. The vet suspects magic mushrooms  ph34r So basically is seems Jeff was on a big trip  :happydance: It would explain the rate he ate his kibble last night and this  morning.

I have been trying to get hold of the dog sitters to ask them to see if they can spot the little blighters in their garden (might invite myself round for a cup of "tea") - not sure what a very respectable retired couple will make of the whole episode :005:

Thank you all so much for your advice, kind words and support  :bigarmhug:

I'm so pleased Jeff is ok after his little trip,a bottle of wine and an early night is needed i think  ;)

Today i was poo hunting in the grass in the garden when i noticed a few clusters of toadstools or mushrooms (i don't know the difference)they were a bit frayed at the edges and i don't know if they had been chewed on or grow that way but as i was ripping them up i thought of Jeff and was going to mention it tonight(didn't have pc access today).

I am so pleased he is alright.

Have to say, you would have to explain to me what they look like as well.

So pleased he's back to normal. I had to stop Ebony from sniffing some in the garden the other day. I think because we have had such a warm damp November it's ideal growing conditions.

It reminds me of a story of a goat that got high. He had been eating plants from a neighbours garden........cannabis  :005:

I was brought up in Somerset. Magic mushrooms are small, brown, low to the ground, usually in grass and with little "nipples" on top.

Have just read this entire thread in one go.  I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but its such a funny thread!

It starts off so seriously (rightly so) and by the end I was laughing my head off about Jeff on his trip, and Mrs Sitter rummaging around in the garden for Magic Mushrooms.

I'm glad he's okay and it was nothing more serious.  Let's hope he doesn't turn into a "truffles" dog and snuffle Magic Mushrooms from anywhere else.

Glad it's a happy ending, wonder what hallucinations he was having  :005:

Now this is something I wouldn't have even thought about, we have little brown mushrooms on the grass at the moment.    Off to clear them out tomorrow.

Jeff is still a bit poorly - he's boingy and greedy as ever but has the diawotsits; presumably the shrooms have worked their way through. Mr and Mrs Sitter did find mushrooms in the garden and have removed them  ph34r
