Title: Need To Get Weight On Vegas
Post by: *Jay* on April 07, 2005, 06:14:36 PM
Most of you will know that Vegas has quite a bad food intolerance and is fed RCW Sensitivity Control - a cupful for breakfast and a cupful for tea. Any more than this and he gets the runs quite badly. He's a tall lad and his weight is now down to 12.6kgs (he got neutered 2 1/2 years ago but even that won't put the weight on him!!).  I was quite surprised with his current weight as he hasn't been getting the usual quota of exercise due to the bad weather so not sure how he can have less exercise, same amount of food and lose more weight(wish it was that easy for me ;) ).  I don't think he will ever be solidly built, but at the moment you can actually see his ribs and spine. I have even had strangers stop me in the street and comment on how skinny he is :(  What worries me is that if he comes down with an illness, he has no reserves to help him fight it. He is happy, eating/drinking normaly, pooing/peeing fine etc but he really can't afford to lose any more weight.

Getting to the point   , does anyone know of any supplements or remedies that could help in bulking him up a bit? My vets weren't much help - they suggested a food for working dogs which would be high in calories, but his stomach wouldn't tolerate it. The prescription diet is the only one that is suitable for him so a change of food is out of the question. Any ideas??

Hi Gill - have you tried the supplement called Enevite it is supposed to help weight gain and stimulate their appetite.  I have used it on Finley do not think it stimulated his appetite but he has put a lot of weight on in the last month (thank goodness).   The only thing I have found which stimulates his appetite is having another dog in the house.

The only place you will get enevite at the moment (as far as I know) is from a company called www.denbar-uk-ltd.co.uk  who have just recently had a delivery.

Fenugreek is used to put weight on.
You get it as dried seeds from the health shop and it is very cheap.
Mix a teaspoon or 2 with water and leave over night and mix in with his food daily. You will be able to smell a faint odour of curry on him whilst it's in his system.

I know where you're coming from. Ruffy is on the lean side. He has a healthy appetite, he just burns it all off!!

I was going to buy that Enevite but the cost of the postage is twice the price of the product. Anyone know why?

Thanks guys - that gives me a few more options to try. Going to get some Fenugreek seeds tomorrow and try that first.

Keep hold of those malted kelp tablets just in case, Gilly ;)

What about raw chicken thighs or legs. Legs are better more skin and fat :)
When I feed raw I have to watch the chicken legs as mine gain too much weight.

He can't have lamb anyway - chicken and turkey are the only meats he can have. We are going to take a blood sample from him this afternoon just to make sure there's no medical problem such as malabsorption and take it from there. I'll start him on his fenugreek seeds whilst we are waiting for the results. I probably won't notice the curry smell - the garlic will mask it

He enjoys his chicken wings so I'm sure chicken legs will go down a treat ;)

Molly has food intolerances too and is only able to eat salmon and potatoe food. She was also very skinny and is quite tall and weighed 10.3kg.  My vet suggested adding coconut oil to her food and it seems to have worked.  We tryed all different tablets and potions, but this seems to work, she is now 12.65kg, it has taken about 8-10 months though. For dogs without food intolerances Frolic seems to put the weight on them really quickly.

Are you talking about the Enervite that comes in a tube in a white box and has a diamond picture of a dog on the front or used to have?

The reason I ask is that I used it once many years ago on a fussy eating bitch and I got it from good old Pets at Home!

I have been following this thread as Chloe is a slight cocker although she eats okay and has been wormed regularly, but she is very light. I would like to see her a couple of pounds heavier.
