Sleepy eyes
« on: May 15, 2014, 07:15:06 AM »
Riley does have  watery eyes sometimes, I do clean them every morning, but lately getting up he has had some strings of sleep coming from his eyes, I just clean them and thats it, but they do water at times during the day, not excessively but he has had this from day 1,  is this normal?

William's right eye used to be very watery when he was a puppy and by the time he was about a year old it looked really soggy sometimes. I took him to the vet and was told the tear duct was blocked, so he had a procedure to unblock it. That stopped the problem for about a year but it then came back and a second procedure was only partly successful. At that point I was told that the tear duct was narrow and would probably never work efficiently.

A few years later William was diagnosed with Dry Eye in both eyes, but the right one the worst affected. I've no idea if the narrowing of the right tear duct noticed by the vet when Will was 2 was the first symptom of Dry Eye, or not.

I'm not suggesting that Riley has Dry Eye, but it may be worth getting your vet to check his eyes in case he has blocked tear ducts. It's a simple test. They use a green dye, which makes the eye look very strange for a while, but if the tear ducts are functioning normally some green dye will appear from Riley's nostrils within a few minutes.

I had a similar experience to Elaine but in Kali's case, skin was taken from the top of the ducts and the narrow ones were stretched. This was done by the opthamology specialist Malcolm Davidson in Edinburgh. She has never had a problem since. Considering the vet told me that nothing could be done, I would always get a referral x

If the ducts are narrow, don't be told nothing can be done as this is simply not true.

Well, it may be true to them, certainly not for the opthamologists!

Is it a problem if the ducts are narrow?  I mean his eyes dont actually stream with water, just a little bit.
it doesnt seem to bother him at all.

Kalis ran like a tap but then she was missing the upper ducts and of the two bottom ones, one was narrow and the other had a flap of skin over. So really nothing working. Skin was removed on one, the other stretched. Job done! So yes, they can be a problem narrowed. I pushed for the opthamologist referral because eyes are too precious for anyone other than an expert to operate on...but that's just me x

Sapphie's eyes are rather watery, and she's had the green dye test but the vet found nothing wrong. She just advised I keep them clean with boiled water.
