anal gland cancer
« on: June 23, 2014, 09:54:08 PM »
Have not been on since last summer because Jarvis has been so good and coping with his treatment but this last week he has had problems passing his poos. Took him back to vet last Friday and he confirmed what I was dreading that we are very close now, the tumour has started to come down . He said to try doubling his lactulose over the weekend to help him go and we would decide what to do after that. What is so hard that he is still enjoying his food, his treats, his walks..so we are taking it day by day. Obviously I don't want him to suffer so how do you know when its time ? By the way the vet was talking last week I thought I would be this week sometime but speaking to him today he said give him lactulose twice a day and  see how he goes over next few days :'(  Am struggling just now!

You will know when the time comes. It's the hardest and bravest thing you do for your loyal loving friend. It's better a day early rather than a week too late. Keep talking with your vet and let yourself hear the advice. It's just a horrid time and I'm so very sorry for you. Jarvis will show you. You know each other so well.

We were very blessed in that we were able to plan for the vet to come to the house and we could be with him keeping him calm and secure and loved. I know I went to the vets a lot at the end trying to measure and decide.I was scared I d get it wrong and my boy would suffer.  It was tough. We are on the other side now and I think we got it about right. It's a very fine balance.

Your post really touched me as I understand so clearly that wondering time when you're trying to work out the best way to handle things.

I'm sending you wishes for better news and strength to cope with each day.

I'm so sorry :'( but I promise you, you'll know when the time has come because you know your boy so well. It's lovely that he's still enjoying his food and walks, so spoil him and enjoy his favourite places with him :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

I know only too well the position you are in. I lost my last boy to this horrid disease. I am not sure if what I am going to write will be of any help to you but I will tell you what happened with my Dickon. Like Jarvis, Dickon was fine in himself. Eating, drinking, walking, playing normally. He was just constipated. Lactulose helped keep him moving. Because he was so bright I have to admit that I really didn't know when it was time. He had one day where he didn't produce anything, despite trying. The following morning (his 11th birthday) I took him to the vet and they said they would try an enema. I left him there but they called almost as soon as I got back home to say that they couldn't do it, he was too closed up. They xrayed him and found that he was suffering from mega colon. They said they would never have believed that the happy dog who went in could be so blocked internally because he just didn't show any signs. I went back in and said my goodbyes and he was PTS in my arms.
I think you just have to keep and eye on how well he is able to do a poo and as long as he is OK in himself and not struggling to go, just keep enjoying every moment you have with him.
I'm thinking of you. xx

I also believe you just "know" when it is time to let our fluffy friends go.

Will be thinking of you at this incredibly emotional and difficult time.  :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
