White area in eye
« on: March 11, 2019, 06:37:03 PM »
Laurië had a visit with the vet today, just a routine vaccination and health check. But we now have a mystery on our hands. Her vision has deteriorated over the last few years. Her lenses are getting foggy like they sometimes do in seniors. She will be 13 this year so not too surprising. However in one eye she has a white dot/mass/pigment in addition to the normal signs of cataract. Three vets have looked at it and none of them had any idea what it could be. After looking through the ophtalmoscope one of them thought it looked like something had crystallised inside the lens. And I agree with the description, it looks like a white, opaque area inside her lens. More dense than the normal foggy area. But he couldn't say for sure that it was in the lens, not on the retina. Seeing a specialist would require a lot of travel and as long as she is not in pain/danger we decided to leave it alone. But I am curious if anyone has seen anything similar in their cocker? Pressure in the eye was ok and she is not showing any signs of discomfort, so it really is just the vision loss that is the problem right now. But I am interested to know if anyone recognises the description or have seen anything similar?

I think this sounds similar to something Maddie has in/on her left eye. Two vets have looked at it including the vet that specialises in eyes at our practice. They too have no idea. The back of the eye looked healthy and there is no dry eye present although they think her vision may be slightly impaired. The only answer they had was that she has damaged it somehow in the past, possibly poking it with a twig etc. I keep monitoring the other eye but so far it is ok.

That does sound similar. Makes me feel more comfortable about just monitoring her eyes. Thanks!

She did have a superficial cornea injury years ago, but that was treated and there was no scar from it. Other than that I have not seen her injured, but who knows. She does dive head first into bushes and slams into things when running too fast to avoid obstacles. Classic crazy cocker zoomies. And she rarely complains or shows signs of pain so I could have missed an injury probably.
