Ben's in hospital
« on: December 05, 2006, 06:54:29 PM »
Just had to rush poor Ben to the Vet as he was trying to throw up and obviously in pain (to the point of running into things and yelling)  ph34r

We'd been out for a walk and he'd eaten a dead mouse (at least I think he ate it after rolling in it).  He also got covered with burrs (horrible spikey, sticky big seed heads).  He had got so well covered that his ears were stuck together at the top of his head!

I started on his head as soon as we got home and Ben joined in by trying to get them off his legs.  He started reaching and I presumed it was the mouse coming back up  :shades:  He could only produce white foamy stuff and grass.  He was reaching and trying to throw up constantly so I called the vet for advice.  She recommended that I give him 5 more minutes and then bring him in if he didn't stop.

Within 3 minutes he was worse, making the most awful noises, shaking and throwing himself around.  I called the vet again and burst into tears!  Poor Becky had the phone thrust at her and she arranged for the vet to see us straight away.  The vet thinks it's likely to be the burrs and has kept him in so that they can sedate him and have a good look.  I should get a call this evening to let me know how he is.

I know he's in good hands and it's not likely to be life threatening but to see him in such pain was awful  :'(

How awful,Debbie - poor Ben!

I do hope he soon feels better;at least he's at the vets where they can keep an eye on him.

Best wishes to him from Spike & Domino. :-*

Sounds to me like he may have a burr partially obstructing his throat.

Well done for getting him seen so quickly. I'm sure he will be fine, but I can understand your worry and distress. I'd be exactly the same!

Hope he is soon back home with you.

Thinking of you and Ben. That is so scarey, I should think I would have had leaky eyes too. I had no idea those burrs were potentially so dangerous  :o , they are everywhere here atm .  I let Fern clear some of them out of her coat. Not so sure I will any longer  :-\. Will check back later to see how he is.

Thanks for all your replies (and phone call Rachel)  ;)

The vet has called back and said that it had been the burrs  ph34r  They have affected one of his tonsils which apparently is now the size of a plum ............ no idea how big his tonsil should be but it does sound awful :o His throat is also very red and sore (I don't think his violent reaching helped).

They want to keep him overnight and I have to call again at 10am tomorrow.  I'm working so won't be able to collect him until the afternoon - presuming he's recovered enough.

The other nice news is that the nurses got all the other burrs out while he was sleepy  :005:  That would have taken me all night - especially his armpits and feathering!

Thanks again for all your good wishes  :luv:

Poor Ben, sounds really painful.   :o  I never would have thought that pulling off burrs themselves would lead this.  Hope he's feeling much better tomorrow and you're able to bring him home.    :-* for Ben.
