My dogs outdo themselves ( well pepper and liath anyway!)
« on: October 26, 2007, 10:27:04 AM »
Pepper when out a few days ago cut herself pretty badly.. she was quartering and flushing in a field beside a river and as we got nearer the fence she worked her way back and forward through it ..then she quartered of in the other direction in a mirror image of what she had being doing already.. BUT instead of coming through the fence or jumping cleanly over it she jumped through the fence one string down from the top and hung herself by a back leg on the line of barbed wire. her front 2 paws wer on the ground.. as I hurried over to rescue her .. she wasnt making a sound.. she heaved herself off the fence and carried on hunting.
I thought by the cavalier way she had been acting it must have just been her hair caught.. but no she had partailly degloved her hind leg fron the hip to the groin in a downward tear.. some bits deeper than others but very little bleeding.. so it was of to the vets and surgery next morning a huge vetbill again and 25 stitches..
 and antibiotics..
she has to have half a tab morning and night.
pepper hates tabs and is an expert at getting rid of them so I hide it in a triangle of cheese and shes been fooled and scoffs it..
well yesterday I had the cheese all prepped,.. was holding it in my hand I called pepper she came and sat down right in front of me .. I lent forward to pop it in her mouth when a blue roan blur flew past like a buzzard and stole the cheese from my fingers and swallowed it before her paws touched the deck..
gone!
 I couldnt believe it..
Liath never does anything bad
stunned I was
she shot off pretending she hadnt done a thing...
the little toad.. I think shes been getting popped at the fuss peppers been getting and just couldnt bear it any longer so stole her cheese AND her anti biotic!
it didnt do her any harm but pepe will be one short so will mention it to my vet whe I see her dogwalking ..
liath is a gutsy little brute but shes never ever stolen food before..
I cant help laughing about it now .. shes so well behaved its not true so she must have really wanted that cheese!
And pepper is on the mend shes to have no off lead walks till stitches are out no jumping up or down either.
lead walks.. she hates them. I put her sporn harness on yesterday.. her tail was clamped down for the first mile.
she really does have  no cares about her health .. a couple of months ago she cut her eye...
she has a long list in the vets case history.. but as someone said shes worth it.!
( and I dont have insurance. ph34r. It wasnt the thing up here for small animals  when she was a pup , with all peppers pre existing conditions and her age they wouldnt cover her now)

Poor Pepper  :'(  they do have some freak accidents don't they?! Tilly ran into a wall yesterday and has taken all the fur and skin off her shoulder and bruised the muscle as well  ::)  I'm taking her for an eye test if she does it again!  ph34r

Your tales make me laugh even if I shouldn't

When I was looking for a family dog I mentioned to the vet that I like the sound of a cocker spaniel - he agreed that they were fantastic little dogs and would I like to look for a working cocker as they seemed more healthy!    What he didn't add was that they get 'sports injuries'  :005:  Ben may be healthy but he gets into the most costly treatment for injuries  ;)

What a pair!  :005: Hope Pepper heals up quickly and can go back off lead asap.

Lou tears around like a mad thing and has come back with the odd drip of blood from legs or tongue (he runs with tongue hanging our and leaves it on brambles). Now he has a patch with no skin on his leg and what looks like a shaving rash under his chin but he never shows any sign he's hurt!  No sense - no feeling  ::)  :005:

I have come to the conclusion that some cockers are just accidents waiting to happen and pepper is one of them.. she feels no pain.. ALL of mine have permanent bloody tongues when out in the rough.. when its the heather sore eyes..and they never learn.

Hmm yes thats a good way of putting it sports injuries.. more like extreme sports!
