Cost Of Spaying ?
« on: November 01, 2007, 09:33:50 AM »
I am going to have Tilly spayed before her first season,no matter what it costs. But I was wondering going round the country what others have paid ? It annoys me in a way, very much like our dentists, that they never have a price list on display.Perhaps the goverment  should put in place some form of price control ? What do others think,or are we just paying too much cos we love our pets....

At our vets they have two prices that go on the weight of the dog.
Up to 15kg it costs £110, Poppy was 15.4kg (they let me off with the 4g).
I did get charged £6.50 for the plastic lampshade even though I didn't need it.

I'm sorry to hear you lost your spaniel in such a horrible way.  :'(

Before I post further please understand I am not arguing against your decision to have Tilly spayed, but did you lose your spaniel after her first season?
Would you not consider letting Tilly have at least one season, just so that she can have the chance to mature and develop before being stripped of her hormones?

No, I chose not to have her spayed, she was in her 9th year.Sadly I was rushed into hospital two weeks previously so she was alone a lot but showed no sign of illness. No leaking from her back passage, nothing.I spent two weeks in hospital, came home and she collpased in my arms,my daughter took her to the vet straight away. There was nothing he could do for her,all her organs were failing,so we had her pts. It was almost like she was waiting to see me just once more ! I couldn't bear  that to happen again,so that is the reason why I will have Tilly spayed.

Bracken is going in next week and I think it's roughly 140. My MIL's yorkie goes to the same vets and hers was 170, but she had some teeth removed at the same time,

I had Poppy spayed just last week - after her first season. I was given conflicting information about spaying, my vet was adamant that I get her spayed before her first season and I read on quite a few different web sites that they should have their first season to allow them to mature, my mother's vet said the same as the web sites.

My vet (Goddard's) wanted £175 to spay Poppy, a friend paid £150 at her local vet and my mother's local vet wanted £80 - So I booked Poppy into my mother's vet - naughty really but I'm not going to be ripped off.

I would suggest you shop around and go with your gut instinct.

Good luck.

It is just interesting to see how much the cost varies for the same job !! I am happy with my vet and intend to stay there, but by posting this thread it has proved that the cost varies greatly and perhaps there should be some control on what vets charge ?
