what can cause dizzyness symtoms?
« on: December 27, 2007, 03:03:53 PM »
This morning I noticed Poppy seemed dizzy or a bit unsteady on  her feet.  I raced her to the vet in a bit of a panic wondering if she was having problems seeing.  The vet checked her out and said he didn't know what was wrong though he could see there was a problem.  He gave her anti biotics and I need to take her back tomorrow (to give him time to do a bit of reading up?)  Anyway, her symtoms are unsteadyness...as though she was drunk,  she's finding it hard to jump on to the sofa and can't seem to settle.  She's still eating well.  Has anyone got any ideas of what it could be?

No sorry, but I hope everything is ok. Balance problems in humans can be due to ear issues?

Are her eyes flickering?  Apparently flickering eyes are a classic symptom of idiopathic vestibular syndrome. It's quite common and the animal normally makes a full recovery within a few days. It can affect lots of different anmals, dogs, rabbits, cats etc. It is an inflammation of the inner ear and causes balance problems, sometimes including walking round & round in circles & confusion.

Could be vestibular disease.  The vestibular nerve functions to maintain posture and equilibrium.

Thanks for those suggestions.  Poppy is much more perky now so I'm hoping the worst is over but it was a bit scary for a while.

Milo had a very bad bacterial infection in his ears a few months ago and he lost his balance totally. Infact I came home to him hardly able to stand up, it scared the life out of me, after a trip to the vets, and lots of anti'b's later he was right as rein.

Hope Poppy feels better soon xx

Poor old Poppy - not over indulged over Christmas has she... :005:

I agree with the others - ear problems can cause dizziness like you describe, Ben had a perforated eardrum a while back and he walked like he had been out on the town!
The antibiotics worked very quickly and he was back to his old self within a day or so.  Hope Poppy is better soon

I took Poppy back for her follow up visit yesterday though she seemed fine.  Nice young vet said it wasn't vestibular disease...it might have been "a sort of mild meningitis"...that really scared me.  He said he thought it must have been swelling of her brain which caused the unsteadyness because her eyes and ears looked fine. Now, how can he see bacteria or a virus in her inner ear? He gave me antibiotics and steroid tablets to give her - and she's been throwing up ever since! We were supposed to be going north to visit family today - cases packed and everything - but are still here hoping another night at home might help her get over the sickness.  I'm a bit tempted to discontinue the meds which are what seems to be making her ill but if it really is brain swelling I suppose it would be unwise.

Poor Poppy  :-\  Sounds scary.
I would give the vet a call in the morning and explain the effects the meds are having on her.
Hope she's feeling better soon.
