white spots on the eye
« on: January 18, 2008, 07:14:58 PM »
Hi first time i've ever asked a question, took Alfie to have his booster and anal glands emptied. His glands keep getting blocked 2nd time in a month,he's only 3 so now he's got scar damage, so he's got to be sedated & have them flushed.
But the Vet was more worried about his eyes, she shone a light into them and said she could see little white spots which I could see too, to make matters worse his pupil in the other wasn't reacting like it should. Not to worry she said it could something or nothing and she wasn't a specialist. So now totally worried about the glands being flushed & his eyes. :o

My friends black cocker spaniel oscar (which I have posted a picture of a couple of weeks ago) is four now and about a year ago they noticed white spots in his eyes (both) the vet said that they were tiny fatty deposits which are not painful  and are not imparing his sight, and he has seen this before in cockers. she recently commented to me tho that they are slightly bigger and is going to have them checked again. She believes Oscar didnt come from a very good breeder either so dont know if that makes a difference but perhaps your dog has the same thing. I will talk to my friend  later and ask if she knows anything more about it.

don't take risks with eyesight in people or dogs, worth taking a look in the dogs papers like dogworld and finding out where they have an eye clinic on or contacting one of the opthalmologists listed (not sure if thats what you call a dog version) and making an appointment with them.

Second what Tasha said. I think I heard of the harmless "fatty deposits" before, too, but if the pupil is not reacting properly I would get it checked out by a specialist, just to be on the safe side and take the worry off. The specialists have the actual equipment for a real check-up of the retina etc. My normal vet first also scared me a lot about Jerry's eye problems and only the specialist later put the problems in perspective  ;)

I have spoken to my friend and she says that the vet said same to her 'something or nothing' and when asked to explain (by another vet who gave second opinion) the vet said the white spots are sometimes an indication of hyperthyroidism, this is sometimes coupled with the dog being over weight tho which you havent mentioned but either way like the others said I would ask for another opinion or get his eyes checked by a specialist

Thanks for the replies, Alfie is only about 10kg. It's a worry because she noticed has soon as we walked into the room, but we've been to the vest twice in the last 5 weeks with his glands & neither of those vets noticed anything. Poor chap's got to have his bum sorted and his eyes seen to. :'(

I think they are called 'Corneal Dystrophies' and i believe they don't effect the sight in cocker spaniels as they can do in other breeds.
