Wild Mushrooms
« on: October 10, 2009, 05:18:22 PM »
I've been for a long walk through some woodland today and Eric was lagging behind. When I went back to him I saw he was eating some mushrooms off the trunk of a tree  >:D He was sick on the way home and is now drinking loads and didn't want his tea. That's the first time he has ever turned down food but he has eaten a piece of carrot I dropped.
Do you think I should be worried about him. They were orangey brown mushrooms that were growing in a big crop near the bottom of the tree

I would call the vets asap. These things can be ahrmless but they can also be very toxic. I would hope that if he ate them they would be the harmless variety as he probably has a sense about it but to be safe I'd definatly call the vet.
I hope it's nothing but an upset tummy  :-*

How is Eric this morning? I hope he's OK now.

I have to watch little Louis when we're out as he always wants to stop and sniff fungi and it's peak season for them in the New Forest right now. I tell him "leave it" firmly and call him away and praise him. I don't know enough about fungi to recognise most of them, so can't tell what's poisonous and what isn't.

I just saw this, I hope Eric is ok :luv:  I've caught Tilly aka the gannet scoffing wild mushrooms before too and had a minor panic but she didn't suffer any ill effects afterwards. The vomiting, excessive drinking and refusing food would have worried me a bit though, if she'd done that I'd have taken her to the vet just to be on the safe side.

Sorry for not posting guys, I've had a hectic day
Eric has been fine and after being a bit lethargic last night he is back to his normal self and has been eating today  :D I rang the vet last night who said if he has stopped vomitting and is not overly lethargic then he should be ok and he was right. One bit of advice he gave me was that if I catch him doing it again pick some of the mushrooms and then we could find out what type they are in the event that he does become ill.

So pleased he is OK... you really do need to start feeding him though, he was clearly fading away  :005:

So glad he is OK  :D

Sounds like it could have been honey fungus - scroll down on here for pic:

http://www.itteringham.com/nature.html

There is loads of it round here at the moment - often round the base of trees or on old stumps.  It is deadly to trees but I have read that it is edible if cooked when young but can cause stomach upsets.  >:(  So probably not too dangerous to dogs but best if they don't eat it  ;)

Thank goodness although she is a greedy little pig, Coco hasn't developed a taste for fungi  ::)  :D
