Bonnie Boo is limping
« on: January 27, 2010, 05:16:24 PM »
Bonnie Boo has been licking the underside of her front paw for a couple of days now. She very often does this then just stops ,anyway we had to abandon her walk this afternoon as she started limping pretty well straight away. I've had a good look at her paw and can see nothing wrong ,no cuts or blisters I've put some tea tree oil on it for the moment and will see how she is tommorrow then maybe the vets. You don't think it would be a grass seed this time of year ?

I wouldn't have thought so John - but our dogs never cease to amaze us.
Lots of positive thoughts to Bonnie Boo and hope she feels better soon

Sorry to hear that Bonnie Boo has a poorly paw.

I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of dead thistles/brambles etc on some of our walks and the dogs have been picking up quite a lot in their coats - might possibley be a thorn perhaps - Lexi was doing the same (limping), but then suddenly stopped and was fine.  Alternatively might just be a strain.

Hope she's feeling better soon :luv: :luv:

Could it be an irritation of the skin between the pads? Might be caused by snowy conditions, brine etc. (Someone on COL mentioned the possibility of a fungal infection between the pads as a cause for irritation, too).
Just thought I'd mention it, as tea-tree oil might be a bit harsh if that's the case?
Hope Bonnie Boo is allright again tomorrow.

Hope Boonie Boo is better by tomorrow. My boy was limping today, I eventually found a tiny thorn in his paw.

I'd be careful with Tea Tee Oil as it can be toxic for dogs and she may lick it off her paw.

On recommendation i bathed it in warm salt water this morning, we didn't go for an early walk but she has since been playing ball with me in th garden and is now resting. I will see how she is this afternoon when I'll try a walk. She doesn't seem to be licking it now. I didn't realise that Tea Tree Oil can be bad as its a product by Johnsons from PAH for soothing itchy skin in dogs and cats

Have used tea-trea oil myself (on the face) and remember finding it rather unpleasantly sharp on my skin so gave it a google.
There's an article on Wikipedia (Tea Tree Oil) that says it might be toxic for animals (esp. cats) when ingested (while grooming themselves). However, the article does state these concerns mainly arise when the oil is used undiluted/ in large doses.
I might be a bit overly cautious here

could it be one of her nails John?  If there's nothing visible in the paw she could well have wrenched a nail  ;)

I took her for a walk this afternoon and I couldn't make up my mind whether she was limping or not (sometimes she walks a bit crabby on the lead )anyway when we got to the fields near the river as soon as I let her off she was off like a rocket chasing some birds ,I whistled and she came running back full pelt, so although I cut the walk short just in case she seems fine.I will still keep an eye out for any signs she may still be sore. Thanks for all the advice.

Pleased to  read she was back to a good run this afternoon, could just be worth keeping an eye on it over the next few days and keeping it clean.
