bone scan interpretation
« on: April 16, 2012, 12:51:26 PM »
Hi Folk,
After a bone scan for an intermittent limp the vet has referred our Ruby s xrays to a specialist for interpretation.. on one hip there is a darker patch with lighter spots "like bubbles", which she says does not exhibit the usual "sunburst style formation of a cancerous condition.., nor I think did it show obvious signs of arthritis...I wonder if any one recognises this condition and can advise? Pretty worrying as she is only just turning 5...and the words "make her comfortable" if it is serious don t bear thinking about.
thanks,
Jo and Ruby

Wilf had an intermittent limp after he was sideswiped by a large dog that spun him up and twisted his body mid-air.

After X-rays and 6 months of not knowing why we were referred to the smart clinic run by a vet who specialises in rehab work with animals and it turned out Wilf had a whiplash type injury and sciatica so not his legs/hips at all

Limp can be very difficult to diagnose - I was lucky in having a specialist in this area on my doorstep.

Sorry, I can't be much help but I'm glad to hear its not a sunburst reaction as that is the most aggressive kind of periosteal reaction one gets. Will keep fingers and paws crossed that its good news from the specialist and something simple and easy to treat. Its so worrying when you have to wait for an answer :(

Thanks for your kind replies.. vet has rung and specialist not sure either..about "unusual presentation" not suggestive of an infection.... various options..CT scan (1k price tag potentially)
more xrays (possibly later to check for progression of cancer?) and a biopsy...or pain control and observation/ xrays..seem to still suspect cancer..
kids and i have had a weep.. but we are still hoping its something else ..she does nt seem to be in much pain now at least.. in fact shes a very happy girl....
a friend of ours has a vet who is a bone specialist and we wondered if we are allowed to have our x rays to ask his advice..
clinging on to our happy memories of 5 wonderful years and reminding ourselves not to take our pestilential but adorable hound for granted..
thanks for listening xx

So sorry you did not get any answers from the specialist. It worth a try getting someone else to look at the x rays though. Keeping everything crossed for you and your girl.
Lots of positive thoughts  :luv: :luv:

So sorry you still don't have an answer :( Its so hard not knowing what you're dealing with and we always fear the worst. You are perfectly within your rights to ask for copies of her radiographs and get another opinion. Another perspective can only help:) I hope you get better news than you're expecting when they investigate it further :)

Jo, I am so sorry to read this and can imagine exactly what you must be feeling right now - I've been through something similar with Delilah recently.  From her x-rays the bone specialist suspected a form of bone cancer called osteosarcoma, the oncologist wasn't convinced as although there was signs of bone growth, there was no sign of bone deterioration which she would have expected to see.  I left the consultion without Delilah and in a state of shock.

She had the biopsy that afternoon and that was still inconclusive - it took about a week for the results.  I then made the decision to go for amputation, which she had 2 weeks ago and is recovering very well from. They sent the leg for further tests and we are now waiting for those results.

If you would like to PM me please feel free and I'm keeping everything crossed that you get good news.
