when should a puppy look like a grown up?
« on: April 19, 2012, 06:38:13 PM »
when should a pup look like an adult dog? i think indie looks very puppyish still (and coat is still quite short) and im worried she might have something wrong with her? the vet didn't say anything when she had her 6 month check up the other day (she's 8 months tomorrow), but im a worrier!

does she look about right maturity wise? it's been so long since we had a puppy i can't remember!

Don't worry I have a 3 year old black cocker that still looks like a puppy.

She looks just right to me  :luv: and absolutely beautiful.
If I were ever to get another cocker BLACK would be my choice of colour.
Cupar is almost one and a half and people we meet out walking think hes still a pup
I think cockers always look younger than they are

thanks, i went to the windsor gundog show yesterday to watch, and the the dogs in the 'puppy' class all looked so much older than indie- coat and face! so i started to worry, especially as i'd like to have a go at it myself. but as long as she looks ok to everyone, im happy!

Well she looks gorgeous  :luv: that's for sure.

Maisie didn't have half that coat at nine months. In fact she doesn't have a lot of coat now at over 2 years old. I think they all vary in that respect. Indie really is a beautiful girl  :luv:

Hazel is 8 months soon, and she looks similar to Indie.

People don't believe that my eldest is 10, they think she's around 3 or 4, and prior to having most people thought she was a puppy and Jennie was the oldest!

She's adorable.  :luv: My last cocker never grew up! I was stopped in the street and asked if he was a puppy three days before he died aged 11. Archie is 8 months and people are always shocked at how young he is because he looks all growd up! They are all so different.

The puppies you see in puppy classes tend to be those that are relatively mature for their age and whose adult coats are starting to come through. Experienced exhibitors will also be very good at making the most of their puppies in terms of presentation.

Indie looks beautiful in your photos and just as an 8 month puppy should look :luv:

Took me a year to start to get Darcey's skirt looking like a skirt. Then she was spayed and they shaved it all off!!!  >:D wouldn't worry.

thanks everyone, i feel reassured she's on the right track now :) I am hoping to show her though (just for a bit of fun)- will she be at a disadvantage if she looks younger than the other puppies?

No not at all, the judges are aware that puppies are obviously not the finished article and make allowances for the coat being at different stages in different dogs. She is black so she should get a good coat, blacks usually do  ;) You will just need patience and continue with the handstripping to get out the fluff and you can trim the areas that are okay to trim i.e feet featherings etc to try and get a tidy outline. But she looks very tidy already to be honest :luv:

It also comes down to genetics of some lines that develop slower than others.

Charlie is also Lochranza and very similar to Indie, and it's taken till he's almost 3 to start looking mature in his body but his coat is still not as long as others in the ring.  He does also spend time running in the woods and common land which has a negative effect on coat as I'm sure we leave some behind every walk.

I'll try and find a picture where I virtually gave up thinking he'd look like a show dog and a few months later when he suddenly changed..
