Title: The Adventures of Maisie
Post by: AndyB on August 08, 2020, 05:08:11 AM
 :luv: :luv:

Well  Maisie has been with me for a week now.  What a week it's been.  Last night at about 9.00pm I had made myself a small mug of tea, I took it into the lounge and then went back into the kitchen for something.  When I returned I could hardly believe my eyes.  Maisie, who had been fast asleep on her fleece blanket on the sofa, was stood up, front paws on the coffee table, picking up the mug of tea.  She jumped off with the mug in her mouth and ran around the lounge swinging the mug and distributing tea all over my carpet.  Only when the mug was empty did she drop it.  >:D  She seems extremely adept at picking things up and carrying them round.  How can a dog pick up a mug of hot tea. My task for today is to clean my lounge carpet.

Earlier this week she removed a glass coaster, which is relatively quite thick and heavy, from my coffee table and was sat in the kitchen with it between her paws looking very proud. Again last night I came out of the shower and got changed, went outside to find my mobile phone on the lawn in several pieces.  It took a while for me to get it going again.  She hadn't chewed it, just took it apart.   What a dog.  Several times this week she has picked up her dinner bowl and ran outside, done two circuits around the lawn with a red bowl in her mouth.  Empty of course.  She has certainly livened up my life, never a dull moment.

Oh my golly, she sounds a lively one,  :005: :005:you‘re certainly not going to be bored!! They really are little devils though aren‘t they? they‘ll cause chaos but then give you „the look“ knowing full well they‘re unlikely to even get a telling off!!  :luv: :luv:

And this is only the first week! I expect we will get some interesting stories from that one in the months ahead  :lol2: :luv: Hopefully no more tea on the carpets!

Andrea.....my task today was to ask how Maisie first week had been.... :005: seems eventful - I learnt early on with Ollie that out of sight was out of height :D

Seems your little girl likes to play with things belonging to her Mum - thus getting your attention...can you imagine what you would get up to if she didn't sleep in her crate at night.

How is she on her walks? Anyway have a wonderful weekend and keep us all updated with the next chapter of The Adventures of Maisie.

What a character!  She is being very personal in her choices.  Maybe she thinks the coffee table is her treat table.  So pleased she is gentle and fun.
How do you get her to make eye contact?

There’s a saying in my house. If it’s not screwed down.......it’s Archie’s.

I wonder if he and Maisie might be related?  :shades:

 :luv: :luv:

Well two and a half weeks on, Maisie has damaged two pairs of my glasses.  I managed to get the little nose pads replaced on my distance glasses but my reading glasses are destroyed.  The TV remote is another favourite, as is my mobile phone.  I found my mobile in four pieces on the lawn about a week ago.  Managed to sort it out after a lot of fiddling, turning on and off etc.  Clothes pegs, numerous ones destroyed.  I have thrown at least 6 coat hangers in the dustbin since Maisie arrived.  She is so quick and sneaky, you never see her take things.  I am having to re-educate myself when I go to bed to put the remote control and my glasses on the dining table, not leave them on the coffee table as I always have done.  She always takes her prize to the same spot in the garden so I know where to find the stolen item.  The other evening I was washing up and she went out of the back door, trotting most proudly down the garden which made me suspect she had stolen something.  I went to investigate and YES, she had my mobile phone.  I have never owned such a thief.  She is constantly on the look out for something to steal and I now know I can't leave her in a room unattended, even for five minutes.  On Sunday afternoon my husband's cousin and his wife visited.  We were sat outside chatting and suddenly Glenn said what is Maisie doing, she was standing on her back legs at the door to the shed.  Glenn said she has taken the keys out of the padlock and fortunately she dropped them when he went after her.  None of my previous Cockers have been like this.

Another lovely habit of hers is to go into the walk in shower when I have used it.  Lovely muddy spaniel paws all around the shower tray and the bathroom floor if she has recently been in the garden.  Again I am trying to remember to shut the en suite door firmly so she can't get in there.  However, Maisie is lightening quick and I'm afraid I am not nowadays.  She has certainly livened up my life but I wouldn't be without her.   :luv:

It always amazes me how why it is, that they always seem to go for the same thing? I had glasses chewed by my last dog and Humph‘ also went for mobile phones, remotes and, oh yes, the clothes pegs!!! I still find them now occasionally when I‘m weeding!
It sounds as if Maisie‘s feeling at home though  :luv: its natural she‘s aware of new people, heaven knows what‘s she‘s experienced before but with time, she‘ll accept that she‘s got nothing more to fear. Keep up with the updates, its lovely to hear how she‘s progressing! x

I forgot to mention her favourite trick, she will have a little drink when I have filled her water bowl with clean water.  Then when I am out of sight she will upend the bowl, tipping water all over the kitchen floor, and trot around the house very proudly carrying the empty bowl.  If I don't retrieve it quickly she will then have a good chew of the bowl.  While the weather is nice I have been leaving her water outside to avoid a flood, but she still tips the bowl up and marches round the garden carrying it.  A very funny dog.   :005: :005:

Try a heavier bowl maybe - I have two heavy ceramic ones with deeps sides („theoretically“ to keep ears out of the dinner!  :shades:)  which are lovely as they don‘t skid around the floor and I also have the feeling that the water stays cooler in the summer.

Oh Maisie Mischief!!!   :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:  you have certainly settled in quite happily at your new pad!  My boys weren't too bad with pinching things, but Lara gathered shoes, socks and undies to stash in her basket.  But taking the key out of a padlock is pretty clever, you have your work cut out there.  What about using a Road Refresher bowl in the house for water? http://www.roadrefresher.com/   Even is she does tip it over, it hopefully should limit the amount of water spilled.  The Mason Cash bowls are very heavy so that could work too, plus nice sloping sides for those lovely long ears.  Bet you are ready for your bed at night, you'll be on high alert all day!

Thanks for your replies.  I'm glad you are amused.   I have to confess when it gets to around 9.00 pm I don't find her antics too amusing.  I do have a Mason & Cash bowl ejp, which I bought for her dinner.  However, the food seems to get stuck around the inside edges and I have to get a fork and scrape around inside the bowl so Maisie can finish all her food.  It did occur to me this morning, when I was rushing to get out of the house to go to the bank and a couple of errands, and madam had again chucked her water bowl around the kitchen floor, that maybe the Mason & Cash bowl would be best suited for her water.  I think they broke the mold when they made Maisie.

For Minstrel's food, I have a heavy weighted melamine bowl with a stainless steel bowl that sits in it, but comes out great for washing up.

Well I've thwarted her.  I put her water in the Mason & Cash bowl this afternoon.  I was ironing in the kitchen and I kept hearing this tinkling sound. I turned round to see Maisie using every attempt possible to upturn the Mason & Cash bowl.  She was trying to get her paw underneath it, pushing her nose against it. Going from one side to the other.  All to no avail.  After several failed attempts she lay down on the tiles and let out a big sigh as if well I'm fed up with that.  It was so funny as I've never really seen her method before as she is so quick, one minute the bowl is full of water and the next she's running down the garden with the empty bowl in her mouth.  The tinkling sound was Maisie's ID disc on her collar knocking against the bowl.  Fingers crossed she doesn't find some way of tipping it up.   >:D

UPDATE

Just a little snapshot of one day in the life of Maisie "Mischief".  Yesterday I went food shopping.  I came home and got changed and within a few minutes madam was trotting down the garden in her "I'm very proud" pose, head held high, bottom swaying, so I knew she had some booty.  I dashed outside to find her in her usual spot on the lawn at the bottom of the garden with one of my new navy Hobbs sandals in her mouth.   >:D  Fortunately, and very unusually she let me have it back and it was largely unscathed.  I had dropped the sandals back in their box in my spare bedroom but hadn't put them back in the wardrobe.  Although I had purchased the sandals in the sale, they were still expensive.  After lunch I was outside having a good sweep up around the bungalow.  I sat down outside and rang a friend for a quick chat, I was vaguely aware that Maisie had gone back into the house when she suddenly appeared at great speed with my pink electric toothbrush in her mouth, (which had been charging in my bedroom).  Well this time she was not going to give it up without a fight.  Round and round the island bed she went with me in hot pursuit, (well as hot as I can be these days).  She then lay down and began chewing.  Immediate action required.  I went back in and got a Bonio.  After some consideration she decided the Bonio was preferrable and dropped the toothbrush.  Whew.  Note to self, you must try harder to close every door behind you when you leave a room.  Later in the afternoon I was getting some underwear off the washing line and dropped a pair of knickers.  Well she struck like lightening.  I decided not to pursue her and carried on getting the washing in as it was now starting to rain.  We had a monsoon shower and because Maisie was hyped up with her prize she would not come in.  Round and round the lawn she ran at great speed with my knickers trailing in her mouth.  She was completely soaked and obviously thought it was a great game.   Lovely - one soaking wet dog and a pair of muddy knickers to deal with.  So there we have it - my lovely blue roan with the sweetest, most innocent face must be crossed with a  >:D.  I think she and Archie must be distantly related Archiebean.

I know I shouldn‘t be laughing but oh dear........ :005: !  Maisie Michief, you‘re certainly making a name for yourself on COL !!!!  :luv:
I got very nervous about anything with batteries after Humphrey got hold of a camera battery once that was loading. We only realized he‘d got it when he suddenly yelped and dropped it, he‘d chewed it so badly it had got hot and started smoking......don‘t even like to think about what would have happened if he‘d swallowed it...
Hope you have non eventful weekend Andrea!  :lol2: x

Sounds a little exhausting to keep up with her, but I would buy an illustrated book of this Maisies adventures. It is very entertaining when I'm not the one dealing with the consequences  :D She is amazingly creative, and the way you describe her makes me smile every time.

I wonder if putting her toys in random spots and making a huge fuss if she picks them up could shift her focus? Laurië loves finding her toys around the house and runs victory laps when we praise her for finding a treasure  :luv:

That sounds a good idea, plus you use the game to get her to bring the toys to you and drop for a reward, the only hurdle I see is getting Maisie Mischief to understand  the difference between her soft toy and your knickers!! !  :005:

:005: :005:  I'm having a real belly laugh at your post bizzylizzy.  I'm feeling pretty tired now after another day with Maisie Moo, as I call her.  I washed down the white UVPC rear door to the garage first thing this morning, which was covered in muddy paw marks where madam had been standing on her hind legs trying to get the keys out of the lock.  Well I needn't have bothered, 3 hours later it was just as bad again.  I have now decided to leave the keys on the inside of the door in future.

I had a load of logs delivered yesterday for my woodburner, in readiness for winter.  My husband's cousin very kindly offered to help me stack the logs this morning.  Around 12.00 we had one of those monsoon showers, the back door was open, but NO madam decided to stand outside in the rain and consequently looked as it she had been dipped in a bucket.  (Don't tempt me), ha ha.  She doesn't seem to realise at all why I take her outside around 10.00 pm, and gaily trots around the garden without a care in the world.  I could set my clock by her, between 1.15 and 1.30 am she wakes me wanting to go outside for a wee.  OK at the moment it's not disastrous but I do not relish standing outside in my PJ's in the dead of winter.  Any suggestions.   :badmood:

Maisie Mischief, you are a clever little button  :luv: Most of us have a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other, but you, young lady, appear to be slightly out of kilter  :lol2: Cannot be easy keeping up with her, but I love that she has a special spring in her step when her mission has been a success! I discovered that Lara (ex breeder) had a weak spot for doggie chocolate drops, and she only got them when she did the toilet outside.  Could you maybe try something like that for her bedtime loo break?

UPDATE

Well for those of you who thought Maisie had turned over a new leaf because I hadn't posted for a while, I can assure you she hasn't.

A few of her recent misdemenours.  She has chewed my gardening shoes, that I have had nearly 12 years.  Admittedly they were not in pristine condition after 12 years, but perfectly useable.  I have now ordered a new pair, to be kept completely away from Maisie.  She has an amazingly strong jaw.  The other day I was using a lump hammer to hammer in a support post for a small tree. I had placed it on the lawn and turned around to see Maisie carrying it off in her mouth, managing to hold it a couple of inches above the ground.  Gardening tools/gloves are a big attraction.  Most of my hand tools with wooden handles are now scarred by Maisie's teeth.

Two Saturdays ago I was at the kitchen sink when I became aware of Maisie dashing past very purposefully.  I was horrified to see she had my Pink electric toothbrush in her mouth, which I had left on charge in my bedroom.  I am desperately trying to educate myself to close every door behind me when I leave a room, but this time I'd failed.  She was running round and round the garden with her new booty.  I knew it would be difficult to reclaim the toothbrush and was very anxious to stop her chewing it so I ran inside and got a Bonio.  Initially she was very reluctant to give up her prize, but eventually the temptation was too much and she dropped the toothbrush in exchange for the Bonio.

I could go on and on, but last weekend she excelled herself.  On Saturday morning I had done a poo collection and left the scoop near the back door whilst I went inside to get a bag.  I heard a clatter and went outside to find Maisie had picked up the full scoop by the handle, distributing poo all around the patio.  Why she couldn't have taken the other scoop, which I use to guide said poo onto the second scoop, and was obviously empty, I do not know.  Obviously not half the fun.  Great, more mess to clean up and a patio to hose down.

She is still suffering badly from separation anxiety, hence me being up so early.  Some nights it's not too bad but on other occasions she barks from the second I leave her in her crate to go to bed.  I am definitely suffering from sleep deprivation.  She is still not warming to anyone who visits and even people she has met 5 or 6 times are not allowed to touch her.  The most progress so far is that she will quickly sniff their hand before backing off again.  Can anyone advise whether she ever be friendly with visitors.  This is obviously not the behaviour I am used to from any of my previous Cockers, who have always been completely thrilled every time anyone visits.

Maisie is a very bright but very complex girl and as I have never rescued a dog before this is all new to me.  I love her dearly and she is very cuddly and affectionate with me but still displays signs of nervousness and anxiety on occasions.  Any advice from those of you who have rescued Cockers in the past would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I had figured that  Maisie Mischief had either found her inner angel, or had gone full pelt into the realm of naughtiness  :005: My goodness, she is a clever little cookie, I can't believe she has the strength to carry a hammer, that is impressive. As she is food motivated, could you keep her occupied with a stuffed kong when you are trying to get something done and keep her safe?  As for people, Daisy does not 'do' people.  We were asked to take her as we have a very quiet house and rarely have visitors.  Not even treats from visitors make a difference.  Maisie has settled well, but possibly not at home long enough to feel totally secure, it takes a while.  Daisy did take on to us really quickly and is a Velcro dog who love a fuss, she is a lovebug.  I would say that it took the first year of being with us for her to feel secure.  We think she was around two years old when we got her.

Oh my goodness it seems like Maisie is a grabber  :005:

I am not sure how you explain no to her, did the lady says she responded to any signs.....must admit I have a vision of her running tail wagging and you spending the day chasing her.  Thankfully the Bonio seems to do the trick for you retrieving things.

Maybe a few post it labels on your doors reminding you to get into the habit of closing them might help for a few weeks.

Ollie was a rescue and he did take time to settle - even today he has only a handful of folk he goes to, but he loves the lady who trims him and walks off happily with the lady vet!! never try to get into the workings of a cockers brain :shades: ....  it was just a couple of days to discover the monkey he is....would it help if I told you yesterday I got out of the shower and reached for my dressing gown only to see plod waddling all over with delight and my nightie hanging from his mouth...there I was running after him my wet hair tripping all down my face.  He is 13 in November  :luv:

Maisie Mischief is a real cocker character......

She’s a character and a half!  Is she totally deaf, even to invisible whistle frequencies?    Are there any gadgets To catch her attention that  you can get that aren’t harmful, that can produce a gentle vibration on a collar when she is out of arms length?  I’m not suggesting a shock collar.   Maybe there is something that deaf children use to attract their attention. There must be websites.
Or a food smell spray collar?    Invent something that works , and you could make a fortune.

Someone I spoke to recently mentioned the use of laser pointers for deaf dogs? Not quite sure if there are special sorts or how safe they are but it might be worth researching? ....
