Any treatments or specialist vets for a Cocker with dementia?
« on: August 31, 2018, 10:30:25 AM »
Hello all

My amazing Cocker who turns 14 next week  has dementia. He is also sadly deaf and nearly blind and to add to the mix has a suspected tumor in one of his nostrils.

He has good days and bad days but circles a lot and is often anxious. I would like to see if there is anything else I could do to make him more comfortable (not to cure him).

I notice that there is talk of the drug Anipryl and also discussions about raising dopamine levels.

Has anyone had any success with any treatments or found a vet who has helped?

Many thanks
P

I can’t answer your question, but think it’s wonderful to have shared 14 years together.  My brothers boxer had dementia, and felt he was too distressed.  However I had a thought about the behaviour, because I had a cat who acted like this... circling, wall staring, and it wasnt dementia, but in fact was detached retinas, causing bits of vision, and resulting confusion. The vet said that she must be desperately unhappy, and at 18 yrs, it wasn’t fair, and there was no treatment.
I do feel for you, it’s very difficult.

While I too cannot say I have any input I would say that I am sure that you will find someone one here who has had a dog with dementia, do hope that over the next couple of days they see your post,
Sending you all my kindest thoughts at this time.
Cocker kisses and cuddles just make my day!

You are always with me darlings Jaypup and my precious Oliver you are so missed

We had a terrier that sadly suffered with dementia for her last couple of years. We had a really sympathetic vet who helped tremendously with ideas. We put Lady on zylkene powder and used adaptil plug ins and spray in the area she spent most time to help keep her calm. Also if I had to leave her she had a worn t-shirt or fleece of mine that she would just curl up in till I got back as she got extremely clingy. I hope you find something that helps settle your boy.

Vivitonin was prescribed for one of my Cockers when he suffered with dementia.  It was quite expensive but aleviated his symptoms.

Some of treatments don't always work.

Its also worth getting a blood test done too as some other illnesses can cause these symptoms too
