Is there a glossary anywhere?
« on: May 23, 2007, 05:21:15 PM »
Hi,

I'm not sure where I should be posting this, but am guessing this might be ok?

I've done a search for a glossary but can't find one, is this because there isn't one?  I'm a bit dim sometimes so thought I'd better check.

If there's not a glossary, is there any chance of creating one?  There's all sorts of words that crop up reguarly that I'm not au fait with and it's a bit embarressing.  Someone described their dog as their "foundation" dog, and the "open mrked" "closed marked" "Parti colour" "Tri colour" baffled me for ages and I still don't know the difference between parti and tri. And in the post about pedigree it talks about FTCH.  I'm guessing CH mean champion but no idea about FT!

Am I just being stupid or do other people get confused too?

Thanks,
Carys

hello  ;)

i am absolutely rubbish with the jargon on this site - if you find out where the glossary is - let me know

i didn't even know what they meant when they asked "what is his pedigree" i know what a pedigree dog is but not what is my dogs pedigree  :005:

glad I'm not the only one unsure of the Jargon

If you type the phrase or word you are not sure about into Google or Wikipedia or even an online dictionary you will usually find an explanation........ ;)

.............or you could just ask on the thread if you don't understand a term  ;)

Exactly, we all have to start somewhere, so don't feel silly, just ask away. :shades:

Thanks!  I feel a bit at sea with a lot of the terminology at the moment.  I've been reading the show threads and the breeding threads and getting completly lost.  I'll try to be brave and ask.

Ok, for what you've asked about so far.

Foundation dog - the bitch that they first bred from.

Parti-colour is usually just two colour combinations ie black & white, or an equal mixture of the hairs to create blue roan. The same would be for an orange & white and of course an orange roan.

Tri colour is where you have a 3 colour combination ie. black white & tan.

Ft Ch means Field Trial Champion - this is usually linked with working cockers, although there have been a few show cockers that have achieved this title. If they are also a Show Champion they then achieve the full title of Champion.

Sh Ch means Show Champion - and this is linked with show bred cockers.

When someone asks "what is his pedigree", they are asking about the lineage and what dogs occur in that pedigree.

Hope that helps,
Michele :003:
