When can she Go Outside
« on: October 05, 2003, 07:40:17 AM »
Hi
Just broght our 6 week old puppy home - due her jabs in the next few weeks

My question is - when can I take her outside into the garden for a wee etc.

Do I need to wait until she has had her jabs or is she ok in the garden at home now?
Thanks

Hi Ben and welcome to COL :)

You can start letting your puppy in the garden to do her business and to familiarise herself with it now.

After her final jab you will be able to take her out about a week later (some vets say 5 days after the jab but some can say up to 2 weeks :-).

She is still rather young at the moment but in a couple of weeks it would be a good idea to take her out in your arms to get her used to all whats going on around her in everyday life...hopefully she won't be quite so daunted when it is time to walk her ;D   Do not put her down at this stage though ;)

Hi Ben

6 weeks is very young to bring a puppy home - I do hope your breeder provided you with plenty of advice about what you need to do to make sure your puppy is well socialised. As Mary suggested, its a good idea to take your pup out in your arms in a couple of weeks time (or you can buy special puppy carriers) so she can get used to the sights & sounds of the outside world. As soon as she has completed her vaccinations course & your vet says its safe for her to go out properly, book her in to a puppy socialisation or training class as soon as you can so she can get to meet other puppies in a controlled environment. This is important as sometimes (not always) puppies who leave their breeder early can find it difficult to relate to other dogs - something all pups need to learn to do.

Good luck
