Innocent heart Murmor in cockers?

Hello:

We just took our 7week old new puppie laddie to the vet. The vet said he is healthy but has what is called an innocent heart murmor. I am so attatched to his little pup and I am very worried about him. Does anyone have or know of a similar problem with cockers? I am taking him back on saturday 10-25-03 for a check-up to see if the murmor is better or worse.   Laddie seems to get really active, then poops out and has to take a nap. Is this normal for puppies?

Hi Indyalan

Not an expert but we have 2 x 12 week olds and they still have a play followed by a nap and there are no heart problems with them.  I would think that your puppy is behaving quite normally.

I am sure some of the other  more experienced members will be able to give you more sound advice.

Hi Indyalan, Ive got a lab with a grade two heart murmur, and my vet said it was possible it could go in the first few weeks. With nell it didnt, but to be quite honest, it doesnt affect her at all.   We have never stopped her running or doing anything a normal healthy dog can do.--nells is three and still mad as a hatter. I,m sure one of the more experienced on here will be able to tell you more.

Its not uncommon for very young puppies to present with a minor heart murmur which disappears within a few weeks - this is probably what your vet meant by an "innocent murmur". I'm sure there is nothing to worry about & your pup will be absolutely fine but even if the heart murmur does persist, many dogs with this problem live perfectly normal lives like Indiesnan's Nell without needing any kind of treatment.

Wilf had one of these on his 1st check, and on the 2nd check, and then when I took him back to be microchipped at 13 weeks it had disappeared.

Have heard it can be common in any breeds at this age.

Sounds like your pup is behaving normally as well. Pups sleep a lot.

My Jasper had this too - nothing wrong with his heart now I'm sure your puppy will be fine. The sleeping too is very normal. Welcome to the world of puppy ownership - it's fab

Hope Laddie is okay on his next check.  One of the pups in Morgan's litter had this and it disappeared within two weeks

Hope Laddie will be OK on the second check.  The only thing I would add is to inform the breeder just in case there is a problem.

Laddie went the vet yesterday and his heart Murmor went from a grade 3 to a grade 1!  YEA!  Thank you so much for your thoughts.
I think he is going to live a long time with us. He is my best friend!
