Ipad connection problem

Please can someone help - I am so frustrated    I have bought an ipad and have spent the last few hours trying to connect it to my Netgear rounter.   It asks me for my Netgear password - well I never had one, the thing installed itself.  I have Googled netgear passwords and it says the defult one is 'password', but my ipad won't accept that it still says unable to join the network.   

I am at the point of putting it back into the box and taking it back to the shop.......

Any help to save my sanity greatly recieved

No techy expert but maybe check the ipad out with wifi else where before giving up. sounds like a router prob rather than an Ipad one.

Have you looked on the router itself for a number? Usually they are on the router I think.
