Norton Live Update wont update!

Having a problem running Norton live update. Keep being told that my virus definitions are out of date and my system requires attention and i need to run live update but when I do i keep getting a message saying that liveupdate is running in the background and to try later, otherwise it says live update is initialising and it may take a few moments but it never does - initialise that is!
Any help out there PLEASE?

I had the same trouble with Liveupdate, and so, I suspect are 1000's of other people. Is yours an older version? Mine was 2003 which I renewed my subscription for annually.
With some very patient help from Jim, I have now got rid of Norton Antivirus & Live Update, and use a free virus protection - AVG and Windows Firewall. Symantec won't ever see my money again, thieving beggars

Had my Norton in since January and seems to updating regularly as planned. Probably put the mockers on it by just mentioning it now though

I think its the older version that's affected, even though you pay an annual subscription for updates they seem to ignore that fact and prefer you to buy a newer version

Def sounds like the same problem.mines the 2005 version, had 2004 but when it was time pay annual subscription I bought the full package again in the hope that I wouldn't have any problems

Don't think I've ever had a virus in the 3 years of using it. I also use Windows Firewall and never ever had a problem  I believe that Norton uses alot of memory and isn't that good anyway

Don't think mine is a virus cos i've checked my message out again and its LU1840 which is live update running in background . Checked on the symantec site and it says this can happen and tells you how to shut it down using control/alt/delete. trouble is mine won't shut down

I ditched norton a while ago when it ran out and replaced it with AVG.

This is free and MUCH better than norton,,,,,seems to catch more things and keeps the computer happy

I'm afraid I am a believer in "you get what you pay for" - neither me or OH would be happy using a "free" virus application; far too risky 

The only time I ever have problems with and updates on our virus software is if our broadband connection is running slowly (often becasue OH is doing something as well)....but I know that some firewalls can interfere with the downloading of updates - perhaps this may be the problem??

I've ditched Norton too, used up too much memory and slowed my computer down no end.  What I use now is Blueyonders own program called PC Guard, it's free if you are a Blueyonder subscriber, so far it's kept me virus and spyware free!  Plus it has a parental control and pop up stopper!

Don't think its the firewall cos thats Norton as well and up until now live update has been working fine.
Does seem to be the fact that its running in the background and won't swith off
Would it help if i do a system restore?
Should I uninstall norton and try to install it again?
Jim are you out there with any suggestions
