I seem to be having issues Colin - to the point where Utorrent will no longer download anything for me even tho there are plenty of seeds!!

I am pretty sure its down to a virus that we *think* we have killed but its a sneaky one and keeps hiding in different places. I have system restored as described above and also re-installed windows but it seems to be coming back.

I never got any of these until I found torrents (and I use peer guardian!) so it must be the downloading thats causing it.....

Out of interest has anyone been successful in downloading any episodes of Heroes as these are where I am struggling most.....The L Word seems to be coming in but slowly and I've given up on Casino Royale and Notes on a Scandal as I want to watch them this millenium not the next

Your right there's not much about Winchill.exe, its not even listed as a virus/trojan on the norton or mcafee sites.

If you run your systems scans and spyware programs again does it not pick it up at all?, tbh when you've had a few viruses on your com id still be inclined to scrub it and start again.

The scans aren't picking it up since I set Zone Alarm to block Winchill.exe from accessing the internet and I'm not getting the constant threat warnings either. I think I still need to do a reinstall though as traces of it are still on the C drive - no matter if I delete them, they just return next time I connect to the internet. Oh and the disconnections are back too, it happened as soon as I clicked on the reply box for this thread.  >:(

Hi Colin

These are always difficult things to sort out, but I wonder if your connection problems and this message are not related.

I know AVG has been known to report this particular Trojan before when others dont, particularily the free trial version. of AVG

Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ where there is a good free Trojan scanning and removal tool.

Are you using a wireless connection, these can be a bit fickle especially with new virus software, network drivers etc.

I dont want to start a conspiracy theory or anything but I have noticed that since the launch of Vista some of the XP auto updates have been a bit flakey.  I have four operating systems spread accross 2 pc's on recent XP updates both pc's hung when the update attempted to install on close down.  Both machines are very different

If you do have wirless connection try re-installing the drivers, if its an integrated lan try reloading the drivers which come with your motherboard.

Thanks Mike - I ran a Housecall scan yesterday and it did uncover quite a few things - but you had to pay for the removal tool, I wasn't sure whether it was worth it or just a scam. Is it definitely worth it then ?

I'm not using a wireless connection but a Tiscali broadband modem. I'm sure it's this that's responsible for the disconnections. I did buy a router but had trouble installing it, so have given up on that for now.

I can't do a reinstall yet as I don't have all the drivers - my nephew built the pc for me and forgot to give me all the discs. He's currently searching for them, or so he says.  ::)

Edit - every time I click on the 'reply' box here, or 'post message' I get disconnected.

Colin

I havnt used it myself, but Iv been told its free and is quite good.

Ah so its a USB modem your using then?  USB can definitly be a pain they are much more unstable and also subject to behaving erratically but it is interesting that the disocnnections coming when you perform an action through the browser.

Try

downloaidng FireFox http://www.firefox-server.com/?s=y_uk&OVRAW=firefox%202.0&OVKEY=2.0%20firefox&OVMTC=standard Firefox is just a web browser like ie and often the prefereed browser by many.  If you dont have the same problem using Firefox then the problem has been narrowed down to settings or a corruption with Explorer, in which case re-install IE ( assuming your using IE.)

Or

if it is a USB modem try a different USB port, it will probably re-install the drivers, generally USB problems can be resolved in this way

And

go to Control Panel, Administation Tools, Even viewer,  loo kthrough the applications and system logs to see if ther eis anything in there which indicates possible reasons for a disocnnect.

finally

you could try removing all your firewall and virus sofware and see if its still happening (obviosuly dont go sites like BitTorrent.)

Just some ideas for you, its a pain I know, I would reccomend trying Firefox firs thogh as its the eaiest and quickest method

Yep, it's beem driving me mad -  twisting my melons maaaan. I've been tempted to chuck the pc ( and myself) out the window.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions everyone, I really appreciate it. It's still not sorted out yet but I'm going away tomorrow ( and haven't got time for anymore fiddling around) so will probably be back asking more questions on my return.

One tiny bit of success though - yesterday I set the monitor so it doesn't switch itself off when I'm not sitting at the computer - and for the first time in weeks I didn't lose the internet connection overnight. I'm not sure why that would be though - surely if all the action is going on in the hard drive, the monitor is irrelevant ?
