Alfie has Horner's Syndrome
« on: August 03, 2014, 08:00:06 PM »
No, I'd not heard of it either.  I searched COL to see if there were previous threads but no.  Looking it up on the Internet it appears cockers and goldies are the breeds specifically prone to it so thought I'd post.  Apparently it's not a big cause for worry.  It appears suddenly, is a sort of temporary facial paralysis.  Alfie's right eye is half shut, his 3rd eyelid has risen up, and his eyeball is rolled up a bit so he basically looks cock-eyed.  Not a good look.  Instead of scratching his head a lot, my vet actually recognised it immediately.  His right jowl is also drooping down.  The brain is not affected so it's not a stroke, and it's not an eye injury but a bit of damage to facial nerves.  It can be idiopathic or a result of a bit of a bash to the neck or (after reading the Internet you obviously get more sinister interpretations like, rarely, a tumour or something).  Vet says it'll go away in a week or 6 weeks (or when it goes) and meanwhile we have anti-inflammatories to see if they help.

Meanwhile, Alfie, who can look very shifty, is looking even shiftier at the moment with his boss eye.  My poor boy.

Has anyone else had experience of this?

Nope, cannot say I have heard of it, or experienced it.

Hope Alfie will be ok.  :luv:

Someone else said that to me.  I'd never heard of Bell's palsy so had to look that up too.  It sounds similar, except they think Bell's is probably caused by a viral infection such as herpes simplex or chickenpox.

I'd only ever heard of it in humans (am a production editor on medical journals)

Good luck with the treatment and hope it works

My friend's 12 year old Golden Retriever is just getting over it. Poor old Ruby struggled a bit with it for the first few days because she has bad arthritis and is quite careful about how she moves, so only being able to see from one eye knocked her confidence. But a few weeks on, her eye is almost normal looking again and it's never hurt her or become infected or anything like that.

I'm sure Alfie will be fine and will get his good looks back very soon :D

My Cavalier had it and he looked terrible for a while. He was completely back to normal in about 2 months (it slowly got better over this time period)

my Ellie has the same thing, had quite an episode at Christmas, but recovered from it OK, but left her face  withered at times and her right 3rd eyelid doesn't blink , she in herself is still quite chipper

I thought it was clearing up nicely but looks worse again today, but maybe that's because we were out in the sun all day working at the Stewartry show.  Plus he was being a sex pest  >:D
