Bones for Pups
« on: August 17, 2007, 01:45:53 PM »
What age is it ok to give them marrow bone?

We went to the butchers and they had some so we have one cut in half but as it's huge we're not sure we can give it to her yet any age limits should we give it to her or not? We can freeze it and wait if needs be and even know some big dogs that would gladly take them if it's too soon for her.

Any advice appreciated!

Marrow bones are very hard and may damage the teeth so I'm not sure if it is suitable for a young pup, also the marrow is very rich and can make them sick, hth

Thought it might not be so good, they'll go in the freezer and the big dogs can have them :D Thanks.

I would wait until she has her big teeth tbh and her tummy is a big more resilient.  As Ladylola says the marrow is very rich and might have nasty consequences for a small pup.  Bung it in the freezer for a few months and she will just love it when she is bigger  ;)

I've given marrowbones to pups. It's true they can wear the teeth down if given excessively but I've found the odd one say 1 or twice per fortnight is fine. Mine were given marrowbones to suck on when still only about 4 weeks old and they loved them. I never had any tummy trouble but thats not to say some don't.
