BARF question - not another one (sigh)
« on: April 19, 2008, 12:22:30 PM »
Went out in the rain to the butcher and got some liver and kidney to add to Lola's tripe (as per the tip from Claire4p).  Came home cut it up and gave Lola a wee bit to try, she was very sniffy about it and has walked away not touching it.

Question is:  I got pigs liver - is this too strong for a dog?  And I gave her a piece the size of a 1p - too much?

Alfie was never keen on offal, even when I flash fried it he only ate some of it and rather grudgingly at that but doing it in a little taste of garlic flavoured olive oil seemed to help a bit. I think he's glad he doesn't get it any more though!

Coco is not keen on raw liver or kidney - I think it is the slimy texture that puts her off  ::) So I either flash fry it or mix it into something like mince - then she eats it all up no probs  ;)

Domino also turned his nose up at liver as well; I don't actually give it raw but my butcher makes his own pet mince with liver, offal & a little cereal which he will eat.

With Spike it didn't touch the sides!!!

My two are just gannets and don't turn their noses up at anything  :lol2:  They eat raw kidney and liver (of any kind - well, chicken, pork and lamb are the ones they've tried  :shades:) no probs, although admittedly it's always mixed in with tripe so it could be they're too busy hoovering the tripe up to notice...

I'd try flash frying though, cooked liver smells alot better than raw to me  :D

I'm afraid Lola does not like liver or kidney.

I flash fried as you suggested and she picked it all out of the tripe and deposited it on the kitchen floor.

Oh well, she's got chicken wings tonight so she'll be a happy girl.

I think the offal can be an acquired taste. Mine were ok with liver any type, ox, pig or lambs but had difficulty with kidneys so I had to chop them up real fine (actually easier with scissors) and really mix it in with other meat, once that happened they just ate it.
