Title: Stagbar treat for dogs...amazing!
Post by: Fudgeley on January 27, 2011, 10:05:17 PM
Thought I would give people a heads up about a fantastic natural bone equivalent that my dogs are loving ! :luv: :luv: :luv:

They are sections of antlers which the dogs chew slowly revealing the dry marrow.Fudge was on the verge of needing a dental and I checked her teeth after a week of her chewing on this and they were so much better. They come in different sized sections according to your dog but my two swap theirs round to be honest.

It is something I will be definitely having from now on, although given how hard they are I think they will last a few months!

I think you have to buy online as they don't seem to be sold many places but well worth the money!

Not sure if I am allowed to paste the link but if you google stag antler treats and look for pure dogs you will find it. they seem pricey but are so long lasting I think they are well worth it.

I've googled stag antler treats and cannot see pure dogs anywhere. I am sure it's fine to post the link here - or if you'd rather not, perhaps you could pm it to me?

I discovered these a few weeks ago, and sent off for a couple for Murphy and Indy. At first they weren't too sure, but the enclosed leaflet gives hints on how to get them interested, so I put a little peanut butter on the end and that did the trick. Once they got going they loved them, so much that they only lasted a week. I've never had such a peaceful week, so I've ordered some more. Well worth the money!!

wow, what size did you order? Fudge's medium one is pretty big, can't imagine it going in a week!

I notice they say this on the website:

Quote
Make sure your dog is gnawing on the antler chew and not trying to break it in half which could damage his teeth.

I'm not sure how you make sure they only gnaw! From the way he chews on other things, I think Alfie could very likely try to break it, so it looks like it would be a no-no for him.

I ordered a small for Indy and a medium for Murphy. To be honest they seemed to prefer the small one, and that lasted about 3 days. They shared the medium one and that lasted about 4 days, mind you they are ferocious chewers. When I originally rang the company, the lady I spoke to said that is quite a lot of variation in the size range. I'm nearly sure she said they were sized by weight, so I reckon I must have had a large small, and a small medium, if that makes any sense?

This is how they describe this issue on the website:

Quote
Because it is a natural product and impossible to achieve uniformity in each size category, there are many occasions that a medium will look longer (and thinner) than a large which might be fatter and shorter. However, it is the weight that decides the category, not the length or girth.

I shall be giving them ago, am always on the lookout for chews that keep their interest - wonder if antler is the same sort of material as horses hoofs.  My lot love the trimmings when the farrier has been  :lol2:

Is it just sections of antler? I have a pair of Roe deer antlers Millie found maybe I could give her them? If she eats horses hoof trimmings it makes her sick but maybe she won't be able to swallow such big pieces with antlers?

I've just got another 2 for my boys. They also have ZiwiPeak Oral Healthcare chews which I get from www.bernpetfood.co.uk. I can recommend the Deer Shanks and also the Deer Hoofers, very popular with my boys. The venison good boy treats are really good for training too.

very interested in buying my Delta one of these for a try-out but im in two minds what size to get, the small-medium or the medium-large as the s-m size look small... ph34r

Im seriously considering not using rawhide chews any more from generic pet shops and going to look into buying her chews/treats from places such as zooplus soon.

If you want to be *absolutely* sure, then I'd suggest you give them a call or email them. Though as you're in the process of changing your pup's food over, I'd suggest being a bit careful about introducing something else new until the change is complete.

Have just  ordered one for Bramble too.. hopefully it will stop her eating the wood work at our new shop, have tried nylabones and those rope things and have been nervous about rawhide chews after reading the thread here! It just amazes me that she is turning her nose up at her food at the moment ( Royal canin junior) evne if we put yoghurt, or cheese on it and then she sets about the woodwork! Hey ho...

Yes -  I think the only difference will be that they have dried or cured them in some way - if you saw off small sections that would be better  ;)

Ours arrived this morning Normy is in HEAVEN and it's lasting very well considering she usually busts through everything in record time but Dave's not that sure... he's busy guarding his bit and licking it occasionally then watching Normy to see what she does with hers..... bless him :005:

ETA: Think he's got the hang of it now  Dave's got a straight bit and Normy's big one has 3 prongs which I think is actually better for cleaning their teeth as the different size bits to chew on mean she's having a go at all three bits in different ways... might remember that for next time I order some and see if I can get the ones with more prongs on :D

Interesting about the prongs as Fudge's which has cleaned her teeth like nothing else ever has is a pronged one too....

Oh that's interesting it's worked so well for Fudge!... I was watching the way Normy was chewing it and it almost like she worked each size prong around her mouth and kept swapping them around... Dave is having a go on that one too now, but I think he's got jaw ache :005:

My lot chewed on them for over 2 hours and have been sound asleep ever since, think it wore them all out.... :005:  Even Ginny enjoyed having a chew, I checked the packet and it said suitable for teething pups too, but I have watched her carefully.

Surprisingly Rodaidh and Caoimhe don't seem to be overly struck on these either, I'm a bit disappointed :005:  They've had the odd chew on them, Caoimhe more so than Ro, and a few wrestling matches trying to get them off each other but they lose interest pretty quickly. They seem to prefer the £2.50 Hartz Chew'n'Clean bones from Asda... plebs :lol2:

I might try putting some peanut butter or Primula on them tomorrow to see if that gets them going.

Normy really loved it and Dave's had a reasonable go... have removed them for now. Have to say though, I've just looked at Normy's teeth and they are looking AMAZING!!!!! :luv: Proper brand new set of bright white sparklers to rival Mr Milans... Dave didn't get the hang of working it around his mouth properly to help clean his teeth, which doesn't surprise me as he struggles to keep his own backside clean........ *rolls eyes*

My two have reversed roles this morning... Normy is bored with it now (that's her approach to everything in life... go at it hammer and tongs until you master it to black belt level, then loose interest :005:)

Good old Steady Eddy Dave has finally got stuck in and has been happily chewing away for an hour now, bless him. He seems to think he can't chew them in his bed though only on the door mat :shades:

They are a bit of a hit and miss here...Glen chewed on his for a while and I thought ace but he's not touched it for a couple of days now....Sally is just too lazy to make that amount of effort and will probably eat it if I cut it into nice bite size pieces for her  :005:

When I gave them rawhide in the past Sally would let Glen chew on one and get it all soft and then swap them over so he'd do the work for them both  :shades:

Mine have had a go at theirs tonight - unfortunately the outcome wasnt as expected - it finished up a bit of a fight, the first time they had ever had a go at each other so we have had to take them away for now.  WIll probably try again but make sure it is for a short period and they are supervised all the time.  The strange things was that when they had the fight neither had the stagbar   Fortunately we managed to break it up quickly and no damage done.

All 3 of mine are still having fun with theirs...they've been much much for chewing anyway (multidog house = eat now or it will be gone! :005:)

They couldn't have come at a better time for Finn with his jaw problems....he gave his muscles a right work out last night with two of them in his mouth.......(he also did some postulating around the lounge for Alfie's benefit.....yep I can fit two in my mouth and I will ave ya if you come near me.....Alfie is supposed to be impressed me thinks but he is so soppy, Finn's display of manliness is completely lost on him :005: :005:)

Finn was however alarmed at the bits he was biting off....he was flicking them off him like they were bits of thistles caught in his fur.....errrr gerrofff meeee..................he is a weird dog I tell you ph34r

Delta; "the serial rawhide chewer" (which I'm trying to get her off and one natural chews) isn't that fussed with it, I've filed a bit off the end for her, she gnawed a tad then left it, so I put a bit of tuna on one end (as cheese spread wouldn't agree with her tum tum) ans she licked that off in a flaSh, had another little gnaw then ran off and left it...I'm determined to persevere with it as I've heard a lot of bad things about the rawhide knotty chews she loves...any tips? Got six this morning.  They all carried one off.
But only Paisley got stuck in, he did manage to bite a shard off it. Not surprised though he chews through black Kongs no bother.
He loves it. The others just dropped them after a couple of minutes. Monty was collecting them all but after a little chew left them.
Looks like six for Paisley  :005: Louie prefers his Asda one. Will persevere with them. I think it's because they are so hard they can't just scoff them. They all liked the asda ones, must taste nice.

Max wasn't remotely interested, didn't even bother to attempt to bury it like he does some things.
I might dob some peanut butter on the end as I'd like to find something to help clean his teeth

Harry sniffed his (fork shaped) for a while then left it, then discovered Max's (straight one) & chewed it for a few minutes.  Did walk about with it later & try to put it in my mouth, but he's not too bothered really

Monty's stagbar arrived yesterday too.  After a cursory sniff, he carried it around for a few minutes and then realised he could chew it :005:.  I have never known him be so quiet!!  He chewed and chewed and chewed, popped out for a quick wee, then straight back to his bar.  I removed it after lunch and when I gave it to him again later in the day, he was one very happy boy and quickly disappeared for another stagbar session. :lol2:  I think we can safely say it is a HUGE hit in our house.

I'm getting slightly concerned that Morgan is becoming obsessed with his stagbar  :-\   He chomped on it for hours on Friday but it was something new so that was to be expected. Saturday he ignored it and I thought the novelty had worn off a bit. Yesterday he started on it again late in the afternoon, had a break for his tea then started again. He kept at it for ages and when I checked it mid-evening I was a bit shocked at just how much he'd gnawed away, it was almost half gone!  ph34r We picked it up and put it away for the rest of yesterday. Today he seems very calm (unnatural for him  ;)) and laid back. I think he's worn himself out  ;) I don't think it's something he can have free access to as I don't want him to get too fixated!

Paisley is still chomping, he loves it.

Sasha is having a go but the other 4 are not interested.

Our two medium stagbars arrived today. I was certain that Roly would like it, but to be honest he's not really been that bothered (I think he wants one of the other dogs to get it started for him  :lol2:).  Ellie has loved it and hasn't put it down since they arrived (which is prompting Roly's curiosity and he has taken it from her a couple of times only to leave it a few minutes later).  Misha has also quite liked them and given it a decent chew, but has spent more time guarding it if anything, and Lexi can't see what all the fuss is about.

Was surprised at how big they were - I might have done better to get small ones.

So big thumbs up from Ellie & Misha. (ETA: Misha is loving it now)
A take or leave it from Roly, and I'd rather have a raw hide chew from Lexi  :lol2:

In the meantime, I found these today in the petshop:

http://www.burgesspetcare.co.uk/products/supadog/burgess-supadog-british-venison-marrow-bones.html

They were on offer at £2.29 a pack which contains about 5 smallish bones.  I have given one to Coco earlier and she seems to love it - has been at it for ages now.  :D

Joules,

Aren't they cooked bones though? (from reading here, I thought cooked bones were a no-no)
they look like cooked to me as well ... I thought you should not give cooked bone to your dogs

I got 2 medium Stagbars for Alfie to try. As raw bones didn't agree with him and I had been amazed at the rate he had been able to dispatch them, I was worried that Alfie would get through the Stagbar in double quick time. However he's not really bothered about it- has given either end a bit of a nibble and that's been it, so am pretty disappointed with his indifference to it.

I had a surprise at the weekend, Caoimhe had a major change of heart about the straight Stagbar and after having ignored it since it arrived in 2 days she chewed it right down to a 2-inch stump that I had to bin last night. Talk about from one extreme to the other. The forked one is still sadly ignored although now she's realised she likes them she might be saving it for next weekend :005:

I bought 2 medium ones and they arrived a few days ago. Both are straight and both dogs prefer the thinner one to the fatter one, even Louis who loves all chews usually. William isn't generally interested in chews but is spending several minutes at a time on the thinner chew, so definitely a hit, but an expensive one if both dogs won't attempt the thicker one.

Haven't read this thread for a while and was interested to see that other dogs preferred the straight ones.

I bought a small one for Maddie and a medium one for Woofie.

They both ignored them for a few days but then within hours the smaller straight one went.  Maddie started chewing it and Woofie finished it to a size I had to throw it away.

The other one is forked and has just been found again but not chewed.

I ordered a load of treats from Zooplus yesterday that were on offer too - 20 piggies ears http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dog_treats_chews/pork/13431 and 6 deer bones http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dog_treats_chews/dog_bones/dental_bones/67663  so one way or the other I should have two very happy doglets

Ours are still going well here, I took them away for a couple of days and they weren't interested when I gave them back again to begin with, but I'm finding they are picking them up at certain times of the day and having a good chew then leaving them again which I guess is ideal for teeth cleaning - Normy in particular always seems to have a good (noisy) go after her dinner or when we're on the phone  :005:

I've been really pleased with them they've outlasted anything we've tried before and have done a really good job on both dogs teeth :D :luv:

Plus Dave doesn't actually guard them for some reason even though he's enjoying them which is great because I can leave them out with the kids around and I hope it's helping lessen his general guarding of chews in the process ph34r

Both straight one and pronged one have been chewed equally...

Monty's is minus one prong now too!  I removed it for a couple of days and gave it back to him last night, well you'd think he had died and gone to heaven, the only downside was he was making such a noise chewing it we couldn't hear the TV! :005:

I think they are a little hard and need a chewer to soften em up a bit.

Dylan was actually frightened of his when I first gave it to him - mind you it was a two-pronged one! He barked at it a few times and kept gingerly going up to it and then jumping back! Daft dog!  :005: Then, suddenly after an hour or so, he decided to be really brave and take a few tentative bites, since then he loves chewing it. In fact we have to take it away from him after a couple of hours, otherwise he'd just chew and chew and chew....... ph34r

Considering the size (medium) and cost, I think it was good value for money. Mind, you if he hadn't got over his fear, then I would have been a bit peeved about spending the money on a catapult frame!  ;)

I bought two large ones a couple of months ago and Dougie and Tia have no interest in them! >:D

I tried all the tips, including smearing peanut butter and cheese on the ends, but they merely licked it off, so I gave up for a few weeks, then brought them out again and soaked them in water overnight in the fridge, as suggested, but no joy. I even tried scraping a bit of marrow out, but still nothing. :-\

Hello

I bought Daisy one.  She was initially very interested, but finds it very hard work.  And if it's too much effort..... she just can't be bothered!   :005:   She's had it three days now, and a little of the marrow has gone, but I think she has decided that the amount of effort to be put into it, far outweighs the output!   :shades:

I shall leave it around and see how we go.  But yes, I agree, for something that drops off naturally,  it's expensive!  Yet, natural, so I'm all for that.
