Do you feed your 'senior' dog senior food?
« on: November 03, 2010, 08:38:35 PM »
I dont know if this has been asked before, but do you feed your older dogs (7+) on senior food?

Meg used to have arden grange senior and seemed to do quite well on it, and then we changed to naturediet and we feed her the normal ones for average adult dogs. She gets a glucosomine and chondrotin tablet, a mixed vegetable one and evening primrose oil one all once a day. She is 9 now- should we be giving her senior food to support her further as she ages?

I am just curious really and checking we arent doing wrong by her. She can be prone to putting weight on, so i dont know if her being on normal adult food may not help this (i.e higher protein levels etc)

Thank you :luv:

Nope. Most of the senior foods seem to have less meat and more filler  >:( That seems to be how they cut the protein and fat content  ::)

I used to feed poppy on senior food as she was prone to putting on weight, and she did have arthritus.  I think if you give them a good quality one it maybe better for the dog.  They seem to be more prone to things as they get older like pebbles now, if I don't watch her fat intake her pancreatitus might flare up again. x x x

No, Jock the Westie is nearly 14 and has adult JWB.  He gets codliver oil capsule and some granules sprinkled on his food once a day which help with his arthritis in his front paw.  He is as fit as a flea and comes with us up the fell, manages a good hours walk and the vet says he is one of the best older westies she has ever seen.  Love my old man to pieces  :luv: :luv: :luv:

I used to feed Sophie, my last cocker, a senior food from when she was about 10 and she thrived on it until she sadly died aged 14.

No, I don't. I have two seniors (9 and 11-years old) and both are on normal adult food with some raw meat. I add salmon oil and a glucosamine etc supplement to it.

Many senior foods contain less protein when latest research shows that senior dogs should actually have higher protein.

Great post Emma as Meg is now 11yrs and on senior food but I was also wondering if it was best for her.  She was on normal adult food until a year ago when my vet advised she should be on senior food so I changed but now I'm not so sure

yes we did with our Bessie with a daily dose of Green Lipped Muscle Extract....I wouldn't feed any of this lot on the same food...been educated a little more since then - although she thrived until she was 15 and half so it obviously suited her.

F.Y.I. Emma, if this is true, Natural Dog Food's senior food has 21% protein while the adult one has 20%.... ;)
So....in the future you could slowly begin the senior one....
