Feet Biting
« on: May 18, 2020, 07:32:39 AM »
Morning All

I have 2 cockers - 1 this time of year just sits and bites his feet and tries to pull his nails out -to the extent that he makes them sore
They have been wormed/flea'd but he just doesn't stop
We have had to put 4 socks on him to stop

Any ideas what we could use etc

So that would be one cocker then? (Just kidding).

First thought is he may have walked through God-knows-what resulting in matted fur.  I'd try soaking/washing his feet (stand him in the bath if he'll let you) checking for mats at the same time, especially between the toes and pads, followed by a thorough teasing out/combing as best you can.

If that fails, I'd be thinking about a trip the vet - you'll need to check the current arrangements with your usual one.

You say its at this time of year -  where do you walk? Could it be anything farmers have sprayed on fields, like lime or chemical feeders? Another possibility might be irritation from pollen or seeds.I‘d suggest rinsing his feet after walks and trying to avoid letting the hair get too thick and long.
Mine even managed to get a tick between the pads a couple of weeks ago!

I know some can get problems with ear mites on back feet as they touch ear area re scratching

I can imagine best thing is to bathe them after a walk if you're not doing it already
