I took Charley to the vet this afternoon to have him checked and get a blood test for possible tooth extraction. When I took Charley for his booster last April the vet advised against having his teeth done due to his heart murmur. Unfortunately, his mouth smells really awful, and that can't be good for him.
When I took him today the vet gave him a thorough examination and told me that there was a tumour on one of his testicles. He has taken blood for testing to see if there are any underlying problems, and will 'phone me next week. If things are OK then Charley will have his teeth done and will be castrated about a month later.
Charley will be thirteen next month and I'm worried that he may not come through the operation. Last year he had a malignant melanoma removed from his back leg and I'm concerned if this has spread.

aww...you must be so worried....healing thoughts and best wishes from us :luv:
-
Oh no, what a worry for you :-\
Hope the tumour is nothing sinister and they can remove it completely :-*
-
Aww Poor Charley and Poor you - you must be really worried :'( :'(. Hopefully its not spread and these little cockers can be tougher than we think sometimes. I'm sure your vet would not recomend anything that might put Charley at risk.
Fingers crossed......

thinking of you and keeping all paws crossed :luv:

Awww try not to worry (famous last words) if you have seen my thread about Pebbles last month you will know that I know how you are feeling right now. Pebbles will be 14 next month and she has had a tumor removed from inside of her ear. She got through the surgery ok, you say Charlie has a heart murmor if you are in doubt about him having surgery talk to your vet again even if it's only for reassurance. Hugs to you and Charlie :bigarmhug: love Dianne and Pebbles x x x :luv:
Have you tried giving him raw carrots? these are very good at keeping their teeth clean.

Sending positive thoughts for Charley, hoping he will be ok. Mary n Lucy

Lady had a major op back in July and she came thru it ok, was even bounced back to normal 24hrs later!! She was 13yrs old at the time (now 13.5yrs old)
Big hugs to you and Charley :bigarmhug:
-
Hope all goes well and there is nothing sinister
-
Hoping that it is nothing too bad. Sending lots of positive thoughts Charley's way. :bigarmhug:
-
Thinking of you and Charley, try not to worry too much I know easier said than done. I know what it's like to worry about them and GA's but like others have said they are such resilient little dogs. Jasper needed a GA a couple of months ago to have most of his teeth out (he has Lupus an AI condition) and he is fine :D. I on the other hand have more grey hairs than I did before >:( Positive cocker vibes coming your way from me and mine.
-
Hope everything goes well for Charley.

Positive thoughts to you and Charley. :bigarmhug:

Keeping everything crossed for positive results from the tests. :bigarmhug:
If its not possible for Charley to have a GA, a solution for his teeth maybe antibiotics. Poppy who I lost last year at 13, had bad teeth and gums and the vet put her on a weeks course of AB's every 5 weeks and that really kept the inflammation and smell down. They wouldn't operate on her, either for her teeth or a wart she had on her head that she kept knocking the top off and they thought may have gone malignant.

As others have said hope he's going to be ok. :luv:

He should be fine, I know he is slighlty elderly but Cockers are tough cookies, my old lady had a double mammary strip at 11,Pymotera op at 12(ruptured) and a mandiblectomy at 13, she got through all very well....Just be there for him and that alone will give him the will and strength to get through it.......

thoughts are with you an dd hugs, are they doing his teeth under sedation?? could they not do as the same time as castration? we do it the same time at work and if we have one that's tricky due to age we have two vets working at the same time. He should be under for around 20 min x

They won't do both at the same time because of the risk of infection from his teeth, according to the vet.

Many thanks for all of your kind thoughts and wishes.
I had a call from the vet this morning about Charley's blood results. They are not too bad for a dog of his age so they are going ahead with his dental treatment on Thursday. They will then assess his reaction to the anaesthetic before deciding about the tumour in his testicle.
-
Sending Charley lots of positive thoughts for his dental on Thursday, fingers and paws crossed for a good outcome :luv: :luv:

The vet has just 'phoned and Charley has come through the GA with no problems. He has had eight teeth removed and there was inflammation on his tongue and lips due to the infected gums. He will be on antibiotics and painkillers for five days as well as a soft diet. I'm collecting him at 7.20pm tonight.
Any suggestions for a decent wet food for him?
-
No food suggestions but so pleased to hear all went well with his op and Charlie :luv: is coming home tonight. Hopefully Henry :luv: will be on his best behaviour
-
That is good news :D i bet Henry will be pleased to have his big Brother back home. please give Charley a gentle squidge from me :luv: :luv:
the only wet food i can think of is Nature Diet, i am sure that others will come up with some other options, i hope Charley's mouth is not too sore. ;)

My mums dog recently had 9 teeth removed she went on chicken /fish /pasta and rice and loved it ..very spoilt  then moved on to Royal Canin tin food the vet gave them. Sadly she can no longer have milky bones which she loved she has to suck a smacko instead :005:
hope Charlie is feeling better very soon :luv:
-
So pleased that Charley came through the GA ok. You must be so relieved. Hope you manage to sort out his diet.

Glad to hear that Charley's op went well :luv: :luv:
Me too :bigarmhug: ....& hope he's back home with you now having lots of love & cuddles :luv:
Tinker was given tinned Royal Canin chicken & rice after her OP - easy to eat & digest & higher in protein to aid recovery (apparently ;) ) she really liked it & managed fine on it.
-
Great news! Hope Charley is feeling OK this morning :D
Naturediet or Natures Menu are good wet foods.
Are you giving him arnica? Will help with the healing and minimises bruising ;)
-
Well done Charley so glad to hear you came thru the op ok. Gentle squishes for a speedy recovery.
-
ooo I bet you all feel a lot better now he's come through the Op ok.....that feeling in the pit of your stomach is awful.
Enjoy a peaceful and restful Xmas with Charley - you all deserve it :luv:
-
Glad to hear things went ok with Charley's dental xx when it's all healed he'll feel much better
-
Glad to hear Charley's op went o.k. :shades: :luv:
How is he doing now Robbie? :shades:
-
Charley is feeling much better. Removing the source of infection has made a world of difference: he is much livelier today and he came downstairs with me when I got up. For some months now I have left him asleep on the bottom of my bed. We go back to see the vet on Wednesday.
I'm beginning to have second thoughts about his castration. I don't want to put Charley through any more pain and stress so I shall ask the vet if he thinks that castration will prolong Charley's life and improve the quality. He will be thirteen in January and I am wondering if it will be worth it for Charley's sake.
-
So pleased that Charley is doing so well. I think you know Charley better than any one and it is up to you to decide what the best treatment for him is.
-
Thanks for the update Robbie :shades: Its lovely to hear he is feeling better, bless him. :luv:
-
Took Charley to the vet this morning for his check up, and all is well. I spoke to the vet about his castration and he told me that it was only a minor operation and not invasive. In the circumstances I'll arrange for Charley to be done in the New Year.
-
Pleased for you & Charley that the vet check went well. :shades: :luv:
When Alfie was castrated, although he was only 15 mths old at the time, his recovery was very, very quick. The following day you would never have know he had the op. :luv: It was more the case of watching he didn't touch the stitches :shades: and i don't know if we were just lucky but he never attempted to. :-\ If you decide for sure to go ahead with castration & because Charley is older i would make sure someone is with him for the days afterwards. :D

Firstly well done Charley for improving :luv: !
I can agree with Nina'smum - we have just had Ollie done (and I know he's younger) but even straight after the op he was back to his looney self and only tried to lick his wound a hand full of times!!!
Good luck!!

So glad to hear he's ok. Re the castration; they literally remove the testicles from the sacs, sorry to be graphic, then they tidy up the loose skin. Obviously there are connecting bits which are cut but they are not opening up the abdomen and being invasive. Please be prepared for accidents in the home though, I only found out after Keli was done and in hindsight realised it was since the "de-frocking" as I call it that he couldn't make it downstairs or would finish wee'ing and walk off and it was still flowing.
-
Great Charley's feeling better. :luv: :luv:

Glad to hear Charley is feeling better, my GR who had a heart condition, was castrated at the age of 12 as a lump was found in one of his testicles. I was amazed at how quick he recovered as I thought it would take a while due to his age, next day you wouldnt have thought hed had an op. :luv:
-
So glad he's recovering and hope his next op goes smoothly too. :luv:
