advice needed, been to the vet and Ella is slightly overweight
« on: February 04, 2014, 03:24:13 PM »
Hey guys, just after a rough guide as to how much i should be feeding Ella?

he mentioned 100grams once a day ?

shes weighing in at 13.5kg and the vet says she should be near to the 11.5kg mark, we currently feed her on wainwrights biscuits and also the wet food and we use the wet food as a kind of mixer, i will put up some pictures later on so that people can see Ella, pretty gutted that he said that to be honest  :'( :'(

when we took Gemma last year she weighed 10kg, our vet said he would like her to be about 8kg (she is rather small) . I went out and brought some cup measures and she has a 1/2 cup measure twice a day. This size holds about 60g of Skinners. As we were now in control of her portions (both of can give the same amount) she has lost the weight and as maintaining it.

Blimey 100grm once a day..
my Ellie would be a starver on that!
hey don't be too gutted there is stuff
you can do to help, feeding veggies
and maybe fruits to fill her up and some more
moving should do the trick , chasing a ball,
chasing you :005: extra walks (brisk walks)#
same as for us really ;)
and remember it's better you have the heads-up
and can start to do something about it before
it's a major problem.
eta Min is right, weighing your stuff is good
to do too.

il get a picture up later of Ella and see what you think, he said she doesn't "nip" in at the back
she has 2 walks a day, and we are going to start using scales, we just used to do half a cup and a little bit of forthglade wet mixer and that was twice a day

wow 100g a day ! of what, Riley is on nearer 200g plus bits inbetween,  he is 14.5kg and when last at the vet in may last year was 13.5kg, vet never mentioned it. Good job as I wouldnt have listened to him.
Its not just about what the scales say, its about how the dog looks etc, please post a photo from the side and above so we can see  it.

Blue is 12.5kg and has 200g per day but has nothing else as he's on a special urinary diet.
His weight stays about the same and he looks just about right.
I check his weight monthly but I usually go by how he looks.
100 g seems a bit on the low side

I have never weighed the girls food. If they look good with feelable ribs then I leave things alone, if they start to look portly I cut their food down slightly. Don't get too hung up on what the vet says. X

Charlie weighs significantly more than the 'standard'. I posted photos on here and everyone said he looked fine (I thought he looked ok). He's not got fat on him, he is solid but he's all muscle.

If you think she looks and feels ok I wouldn't worry too much :)
My beautiful little boy Charlie :)

Pearl is around 13Kg and should be closer to 12.5Kg - she's on 140gm Skinners Salmon and Rice but will be going back on the museli soon (120gm) split over 2 meals a day.  I've always weighed her food from the day she came home - the extra weight is all the gravy bones "awarded for good behaviour" when my neighbours look after her  :005: funny how she always loses weight on holiday ;)

Jinley is just over 13kg and looking a bit portly.  Its a case of calories in against energy out (as my Doctor keeps telling me :shades: ph34r).  Since I have had this dreaded flu I havent had the energy to walk her twice a day and like Jayne's Pearl, she has a couple of biscuits during the day, usually at bed-time.  There are days that she doesnt bother eating anything other than a couple of gravy bones, so will just have to increase her exercise levels.

But 100g does seem a little low for daily food.

We have just fed Ella again and Roughly she has 100grams twice a day, so is it a case of reducing further?
And what veg can people suggest? So we can add some more to her diet or as treats, I'll upload a photo in a bit

Most veg you can add, green beans, peas, carrots, sweet potato, butternut squash etc, well these are all what riley has, not all at once though ;)
