Fish Oil
« on: March 30, 2007, 12:26:57 PM »
I noticed on another thread that if a dog has a dry coat that fish oil is a good thing to give them.  Is it of any use even though their coats are fine.  I mean would there be any benefit to adding it to Kalis diet?

I think it might make a difference - I've noticed Misty's coat has improved a lot since giving her some fish based treats ( sea biscuits and sea jerky) - her coat never seemed bad but it is definitely silkier and glossier now. The same company make a Salmon Oil Supplement, which I plan to try out too. You can get it here, if you are interested...

Thanks Colin, I will definitely try the salmon oil.  Well, Kali will!  ;)

Julie, she would need a truckload to help her madcap brain ph34r

(Sorry Colin.  Did look at putting it under health but thought it would be the wrong place ph34r)

That's OK Sheryl - I wasn't sure which section was the right one either.

Your post reminded me we are getting short on the fish treats and needed to stock up - so I've just ordered two bulk boxes and a bottle of the Salmon Oil too.

Colin
Ive just posted on another thread about ichy skin and fish oil.  I have seen the fish biscuits by fish4dogs at kennelgate and wondered whether to get them.  I also wondered if it would be better getting some kind of fish oil in a bottle and putting it on her food rather than giving her capsules. Glad I saw your post.

I use cod liver oil for mine and have always used oil as the dogs seem to love it anyway so for me no point in getting capsules.

Hi, I'm watching this post as I've recently bought Molly (2O months and spayed) and her coat is quite dull.  Someone mentioned Extra Virgin Olive Oil drizzled on food - but I've done searches and only found good references to Star Flower and Evening Primrose Oil.  Gracie has a gorgeous shiny coat but she's only a baby  :luv:

Sounds like I've got it completely wrong  ph34r and should be looking into fish treats now!

Kelp tablets are also great for shiny coats

My two girls have been having evening primrose oil on their food for about 3 months now and their coats are soooo shiny, it makes me smile.   :D  Archie is on it too, but as he has still got his puppy coat his is still a bit dull, but I am sure once his adult coat comes through it will be gleaming.  I am thinking of giving them salmon oil too for their joints as much as for their coats.   ;)

Boo

Ive tried extra virgin olive oil on my Molly's food, but her coat didn't improve.  Haven't seen any improvement with fish oil capsules yet, so Im going to try the salmon oil and fish treats.  My Mols coat is very dull, dry and fluffy, not sure whether its due to her being spayed.  As for kelp I think that is in her food already.  Thanks for all the advice on here.

Would giving a mixed diet of sardines or pilchards in addition to their regular dry food be just as good ?

Mine get those too, twice a week they get sardines in tomato sauce with a raw egg and shell, mixed into their biscuits, every other day they get tripe mixed into one meal a day.  They are a glowing picture of health and I have just ordered some of the salmon oil, so I should be able to use them as a mirror soon.   :005:

Annie, does the shell of the raw egg have some nutitrional (sp) value ?  I have noticed on other threads that some give the egg & the shell.
