MY OH is a IT Security Manager (amongst his other job titles) - and as a consequence, our home systems are comprehensively protected with hardware and software  :005:

He doesn't recommend the "free" products - quite rightly using the "get what you pay for" argument; even though the product may be effective and good at present, he feels that there is less motivation for the developers to keep updating and improving a free product in the same way as a company like Symantec/Norton/McAfee do to maintain their market share/profits.

I think the annual updates of Norton are often cheaper than buying a completely new product - but like most software, each version will only have updates published/sold for a few years  ;)

Hmmm, someone should tell AVG that Rachel - they seem to update on pretty much a daily basis ;) I think if you have a reasonable level of PC experience and use a combination of the excellent free software out there (firewall, spyware detector, antivirus) and make sure you keep them up to date, then there's no need to buy expensive products but that's just been my experience. We've not had any probs with viruses/trojans etc since we've been using the free progs anyway.

I'm an AVG convert as well and they're always top of the list for the PC mags. I used to have problems with Norton and never have had with AVG (plus thye have a good forum where you can resolve a lot of issues if need be which I never managed to do with Norton). Both my main PC and laptops are covered plus Virgin my ISP do block a lot (including spam)

AVG gets my vote too - i've lost count of the number of people i've converted to AVG after they have had problems with Norton/symantic.

We use AVG too....I also use their free spyware prog!

We have had a couple of very nasty virus/Trojan's which have demanded a re-install of windows to get rid of but no anti-virus was capable of fixing it not just AVG.

We paid for Norton for years and had our internet banking hacked and money withdrawn  ph34r had to getthe fraud squad involved to get the £4500 back that was taken......the bank denied it wasn't us as the hacker telephoned them and gave them our password! so I am not a Norton recommender at all.

Cheers

Jane

I have used AVG for years. I check for an update every day (Habit) and there nearly always is one there. I personally had lots of problems with the Norton Live Update feature so gave up in the end and tried AVG - never looked back  :D

We have AVG on our computer and laptop too. It updates itself automatically on practically a daily basis and we haven't had any problems since we installed it.  :D
Unlike when I had Norton software on my laptop and I caught something very nasty.  >:( Everytime I tried to connect to the internet, it crashed my laptop and loaded a 42 page document of pornsite addresses.  :o  :o

Don't be complacent tho - AVG is not foolproof! I know I have an awful Winfixer trojan on my PC at the mo and it's slowly pulling it to pieces. I'm about to start a full rebuild which will not be fun - and yes AVG is always running and up to date. AVG cannot protect you from web based monsters!

I'm about to actually move to Norton 10 corporate.

Dont forget however, that along with AVG which is Virus only.  You also need a spyware protector.  I use Spyware Vanisher - I think that you have to pay for that one - however I got it from work  ::) ::)

There is a free one that I have used before called Spyware Begone.  Spyware is much harder to get rid of.

I had the message too about AVG no longer being free from January 2007......I used to use Norton but found it used up too much memory and slowed my computer down no end.  Then when you try to remove it completely it's a nightmare.

AVG will still be free from Jan 07 for personal use - they are discontinuing AVG Free 7.1 but the new 7.5 version will remain free. I think the emails are just to encourage people to download the new version ;)
