Please recommend a food to bulk Zara up a bit please!
« on: April 07, 2008, 04:50:11 PM »
Just putting the feelers out really........I want Zara to put on a bit more weight as she is at the lower end of the scale but healthy when I weighed her. At the moment she is on James WB puppy kibble. I havent got alot of space in the freezer so Barf is not an option. She is very active which is why I feel she has a slender frame. Can anyone suggest a food or way of getting her to put on a bit more weight? Any comments would be greatly received.

Unless she's literally skin and bone she's probably just very lean and healthy. Far too many dogs are overweight so I wouldnt feed her any extra unless your vet advises it. What weight is she and what height to the shoulder? With mine I can feel their ribs with a very thin layer of skin over the top but they have solid muscle where there should be muscle. Thats how I like them to be. Also, if you look at them from the top there should be a nice waistline visible not just a straight line from ribs to rump.

1 raw chicken wing a day or a handful of raw lamb mince or tripe

honestly, bailey looks like hes never been fed, so i took him to the vets and he said he was a healthy weight, we are just so used to seeing fat cockers that he just looks skinny!!  he said better to be at that end of te scale than the other.  once they get overweight its difficult to shift it

Another vote for tripe here. Green(unwashed) tripe is more nutritious than bleached white (human grade) tripe.

Yes it stinks! Take only what you need out of the freezer, cover it to defrost. Whip the cover off to feed and I guarantee it will be scoffed in seconds -so the smell won't linger  ;)

I think I have heard of people getting it at Pets at Home. I get mine from my independent pet shop. AMP products Prize Choice (I know there are other makes) sell 400g blocks for about 50p and 2Kg packs of freeflow minced tripe for about £2.50 although I can't remember exactly how much I pay.
You can get a list of stockists and an idea of their whole range from here.

When we got Maddie (she was 8months) I was very worried about how skinny she was - she would only graze on dry food.  Eventually we changed to a tub of nature diet a day (which she absolutely loves) and she has put weight on - too much unfortunately  ph34r
