I wouldn't worry, I've got a funny coloured lab and a cockerpoo this week - and as my cockerpoo is sired by the same dog as your springer I'm seriously confused
I'd agree that his short clip and liver colouring are probably prompting the springer association.. show type springers can have very show cockery ears also, so that wouldn't necessarily help distinguish him
